Radiator Fans (Replacements)

Featured Replies

It's that time of year again... it's too hot for my car to cope with only 1 working fan, so it's about time I sorted the issue out. I've been told the radiator + 2 fans are all 1 sealed unit, but I'm of the opinion you can just replace the fans. Does anyone know?

Also, if it is possible, does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket fans?

Cheers - J :)

Whilst this is not ETKA, for the purpose of showing the main parts this should tell you what you want to know.http://vagpart.com/skoda/octavia-oct-eu-2003-12190-fan-ring-air-guide/

I can say from personal experience of changing the fans, that the problem that you are most likely to encounter is rusty heads on the Torx screws that hold on the cowl to the radiator, so use a good quality bit, locate it solidly in the screw head, and try to shift it on the first try . Once you get those shifted, the job is simplicity itself, the cowl detaches from the radiator and lifts away with both fans and a short loom attached.

Hope it helps,

Phil.

Hmmm. Mine have started sounding like a UFO taking off and going flat out on cold startups (most of the time). Perhaps I'd better look for a set too...

I'd check your fan control unit and thermo switch as well while you're at it as something sounds not right there if they are flat out from cold unless you have the A/C on.

I never switch AC off, but it's only a recent thing so point noted. Cheers. :)

No problem, just out of interest, have you ever come across this vid on youtube?,

I know it shows a golf, but the platforms are similar and it gives you the basic idea of what to check and how.

Vid is only 10 mins and covers the topic quite well in my opinion, the only outlay is a foot of wire and two crimp on spade terminals, doesn't get much cheaper than that in these times.

Just a thought and hope it might help.

Nice find Wino, some good stuff in there.

Mine slow down after about 30 seconds, but on a cold start they often go berserk for that time. Thanks for the pointers Phil, you're a star. :)
