Sudden loss of drive

Featured Replies

Hi,

hopefully folks can point me in the right direction for my first post.

Driving my daughter's 1.2 12v Fabia sport (which we love) with about 35k miles on it - 2006.

Whilst out in the middle of nowhere on Monday, the car lost drive completely whilst moving from 4th-5th on a long straight.

No warning, no funny noises or smells, just revs shot up in all gears.

Fortunately my 18-year old wasn't on her own and we were there to help (her first "big run" in the car).

A quick check of things showed no oil around the gearbox, no obvious holes in casings, all gears can be selected, but when the clutch is released there is a slight rumble and no drive.

Even at that point no funny noises.

It took nearly 3 hours for the recovery company to reach us. Car's currently in a garage about 50 miles from home, hopefully they can look at it soon.

Wondered if anyone had experienced this and could point us in the right direction as to the fault - garage still hasn't called us with the results.

Hopefully not the gearbox - are these ones prone to failure?

The car has a full service history and was serviced about 2 months ago at a local garage I've used for about 10 years so know them well and trust them - they said the car was perfect, which it has been until Monday.

Thanks for any help.

Neil.

Sounds like gearbox to me unless the clutch has had a catastrophic failure

I say clutch had the same thing happen to me in the Pulsar, went from 3 to 4 and nothing, no gears or no drive. Replaced the clutch and all was well again.

I think if the gearbox had gone you would get some pretty horrible noises when releasing the clutch (speaking from experience of gearbox bearing failure on our previous Cordoba PD130).

I'd say the clutch or clutch hydraulics have failed. Although most likely the clutch itself or springs as a hydraulic failure would likely result in the clutch not able to disengage.

And no... failures on these gearboxes are pretty much unheard of. It's usually the 6 speed box that's paired with the turbo diesels that are a bit weak (as I found out!)

Unless of course it's a cv joint failure. The splines could have gone (highly unlikely on a low mileage car though), it s more likely to be a clutch failure

Cv joint or clutch. Possibly the diff but unlikely. Did the speedo still work while it was moving ?

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies so far.

Yes, speedo was still working, there were no bangs or horrible noises. Garage thinks it's the clutch checked cv joints and no issues there, hopefully they'll get the gearbox out tomorrow and we'll know for sure.

Neil.
