breaking/running in my new car

Featured Replies

hi guys,

first ever post here. I'm currently driving a fabia mark2 VRS, shes a lovely girl, none of those nasty oil usage problems. I thought i'd treat myself to a bday present in may so I ordered an Octavia VRS 230 dsg hatch. ive been given an approx. built date of week 36 (mid sept). soooo long!

but ive been doing some research into how I should drive her when I collect. some people say thrash it for the first 100 miles, to bed everything in, then drive normal after that. would appreciate everyones advice/experience/views on this. cheers guys.

just drive it like you  normally would, no need to do anything special.

Drive it like it's stolen  :D

Mods, duplicated thread.

There IS some guidance in the handbook.

I have driven mine in mixed fashion , no particular running in just change the different driving modes when the opportunity arises .

Mine has now done 400+ miles now and drives a treat and feels quite rapid in VRS mode lol

You are not just bedding in the motor but also tyres and brakes so I'd take the "drive it like you stole it" advice with a pinch of salt during the initial period.

I'd follow the manual's advice regarding a graduated rise in maximum revs over the running in period.

It won't do any harm to use a bit of throttle within that rev range though as the pressure helps to bed in the rings improving the seal.

Which probably equates to "drive it like normal" anyway. You are hardly likely to be holding up traffic

There is little consensus but most do agree on:

Ensure the engine is properly warm before any pushing on

Varied engine revs, throttle and load are helpful

As a few pointed out, it is not only the engine you are bedding in. Having recently replaced a clutch in a car I was driving, most clutch manufacturers give very specific instructions on how to break one in and if I were you, I would look at it.

I also agree that a new engine needs some acceleration and high speed driving on motorway to really open up, but not before you break in the clutch :)

It's a dsg box. Also, I ordered mine on the 23rd May,had communication with dealer and gone from an expected build week of 36 and now brought forward to week 33, although this isn't fully confirmed yet. Seems a long time to confirm, also is it true that Skoda are having problems satisfying the demand of the 230? And also true the factory shuts down for all of July? Thanks
