Humming/Vibrating noise

Featured Replies

Hello,

Firstly, I apologise for posting on a Skoda forum with a SEAT problem! However, since the Fabia and Ibiza share so many parts, I thought it was worth a shot so I can go armed with at least a little bit of information should I need to visit a dealer!

I've already posted this question over on the Seat Forum but not managed to get an answer, like I say...the engine hasn't grown in popularity just yet...

My car is a 2016 Ibiza FR 1.0TSI DSG. One thing I have found is that information is very sparse on this engine at the moment as not that many cars have it, being a new one. I think the Octavia may have just started shipping with it in fact.

My problem stems from the warm weather we've had recently and I've started to notice a loud humming/vibrating behind the dashboard (maybe in engine bay) when the engine is up to temperature and is idling.

The noise increases in speed/pitch when I press the accelerator maybe up to about 2000rpm. However I can't be certain as the engine may just drown out the noise at this point.

I must add, this is without the A/C turned on. However, it does still occur with the A/C on (manual, not climate).

I'll attach a video here of the sound which can be heard quiet clearly. I've seen a few posts on various forms from various VAG cars with the same sound but no thread ever gets to the bottom of the problem.

Hopefully someone can take an educated guess as to what it may be, whether it indicates potential failure of a component or whether it's actually completely normal?

Thanks :)

Is it the cooling fan kicking in due to hot weather?

My initial thought, but when I pulled onto my driveway and opened the bonnet (with the noise active) the cooling fan was deadly still.

The only time I see the cooling fan come on is if I press the A/C button in the cabin and turn the cabin fan on. The cooling fan then instantly comes on.

As predicted, same noise on the way home today. Even heard it whilst driving (sedately!) at 40mph.

I turned the A/C on to do a bit of testing and curiously this made the noise disappear.

I then turned the A/C off again and the noise never came back.....??

Sorry to hear this happening mate. Might be a idea to take to dealer and ask the too look into it. Show him the video, also, as it means you've got proof of it happening. It doesn't sound normal but I could be completely wrong mind, I'm just a layman with no experience. Hope you get it sorted, though.

Hm, that sounds somewhat like the noise in my Fabia III?

Noisy air con pumps are a commonality at the moment.

Exactly the same! Have you found out what it is?

Do the A/C components still run even when the A/C isn't turned on?

Unfortunately I'm still trying to find out what it is. They couldn't find any irregularities when they ran some tests recently. Please let me know if you'll be able to fix it.

What exactly do you mean by your second question?

They do indeed.

It would make sense then I suppose... I don't really understand why turning the air con on then off again makes the noise stop though? :(

Because the system is running at next to no pressure. The only reason it's still in motion is to prevent the system becoming stagnant and seizing.

Keeping the gas/oil circulating keeps the seals lubricated and the pump in working order.

So in essence - the system is never completely "off".

Thanks for the replies. I may try and drop by the dealer on Saturday morning to show them what's happening and get it booked in. I'd much rather take it to them while it's actually doing it so that they can see it for themselves!

Please keep us posted. Thanks!

Hello,

I have the same noise https://youtu.be/AjB-JNm4aW8 after 3000 km the sound disappeared. Always he performed when the AC was turned off. Unfortunately, the dealer can not determine the problem because sound no longer exists.

Wow thanks for sharing, yes - exactly the same noise!

It's quite reassuring to know that it may disappear of its own accord... Very strange and seems to be a common part used across the VAG range that is making this noise.

Did you notice whether it was temperature dependant or not? I only seem to notice mine when the outside temperature is above 18 Celsius.

That's exactly the same sound I have as well. I wouldn't count on it to disappear by itself, though. I'm at almost 30,000 km and it's still there (bought my car at around 21,000 km).

If refers to the temperature is only the temperature of the engine. The engine is warmer could be clearly heard the sound. Unfortunately, or fortunately with me the sound is no longer there. So I will not have exchanged the air conditioning compressor by a dealer.
