What engine mod next?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Right, im at that stage of engine modding; I dont know what to do next; before I get a remap. Your advice as always would be most welcome.

My Octy 4x4 1.8T current engine mods are:

Forge 007p recirc valve

K&N Panel Filter

Blueflame stainless 2.5" exhaust, sports cat and downpipe

Later this month I will be having the following fitted:

Forge FMIC

Forge/Samco TIP

Other mods (non engine related) are 312mm front brakes, R32 front ARB and hopefully Jabba rear ARB if they make them.

Coilovers are also in the future plans so I dont want to spend out on improving the current suspension setup yet.

So..... what next on the engine? After a remap (currently its a Jabba but Im looking at Custom Code to replace it) id like to see 250lb/ft torque and 225 bhp. ....and before anyone says it; I want to stick with the K03's turbo as I love its driveability characteristics. So what else is worth swapping/uprating before the remap?

PS - ALL THE BEST FOR 2006 GUYS!

Consider a cold air intake as well as the panel filter. They give more bhp and torque, but more importantly they sound wicked.:D

How much do you guys spend on these mods and, more significantly, insurance (You could probably insure a Porsche for less!)?

I'm all for DIY and tweaking, but i've noticed that even a FMIC costs about 800quid!

I'm only planning to have mine put on the rolling road, possibly re-mapped and maybe attempt to improve intercooler air flow somehow.

It would be interesting to see someone's modified car to find out how much difference it makes.

ps. FocusZtec, did you once frequent the FFOC forum?

a change of turbo doen't have to mad le, get an E05 or AM04 and you could be seeing high 200's with pretty much the same driveability :)

Thats an interesting idea but I cant imagine a bigger turbo start spooling at just over 2k like this one does. I happen to have a GT28 barely run in sitting in the garage from the old Focus so it would make some sense but I'd love to get the best out of this one for now. I dont want silly power on my daily driver; been there, done that. :P

I still do! I was the Chairman of the FFOC for the last four years - I stepped down after buying my Octy.

So theres no other single item to uprate/change before I go for the remap?

Cheers,

Lee

You could think about:

Manifold spacer, cicra 80 quid from JBS, ask for the good one, not the foam one.

Water injection

Maybe the 3" maf / inlet

Filter v cai, little or no real world difference, except noise.

4 bar fuel pump, depending on what / who maps your car.

That should get you up towards 230/40 where the std turbo starts to max out...regardless of what people claim...physics dictate.

Then it's onto ARB's, suspension, bushes :) but as your daily driver, it depends how you want to go...

Where can the 3" MAF be bought from? That sounds interesting.

Have you thought of a 3" down pipe and de-cat, instead of the sports cat. Might be cheaper and would give more power. Check with your tuner to see i they can map it, or you'll get an engine warning light.

3'' maf = Audi S3.

IHI VF34 comes in sooner than a GT28 from what I have experienced and driveability is much better than the KO3S......IMHO.

IHI VF23...as per Scooby 22B...kicks in sooner but won't give as much power ultimately....may well not drive as well due to it coming in eariler though.

Adrian - does Briskoda have a parts number resource hidden anywhere? Im interested in that 3" MAF. :)

VF34 means little to me.... off to do a search or ten. :)
