Light bulbs mysteriously stop working at dealer

Featured Replies

Hi

On a couple of occasions now (at least), I've been surprised when picking up my car following a service/MoT or health check to hear that a light bulb was not working and needed to be replaced despite my knowing for a fact that it was working when I dropped the car off.

I'm wondering whether this happens when they connect to the car's diagnostic port. Any thoughts?

Cheers - Stuart

Had the same thing happen to me, twice! Have to say I was a bit suspicious given that there was nothing amiss when I arrived at the garage.

Mark  the metal part of your bulbs with permanent marker , brake/side light bulbs seem to be the favourite for blowing at MOT times.

Like hand brake performance below requirements , it happens if the handbrake is not applied enough.

check the fuses in the engine bay .mine had the same issue

"Dim" bulbs are also a favourite with dealers.

Mot/service money maker. Dirty tricks of the trade. Another is the indicator bulb not yellow enough, ...yeah....right.

My dealer insists on putting a lengthy string of advisories that have nothing to with the MOT in the hope that I'm gullible enough to authorise unnecessary expensive work. Tiny cracks / scratches / scuffs on lamp clusters and number plates seem to be a favourite with them

Fortunately now out of warranty, so bye bye dealer.....

I got told by a Mazda dealer once the car would fail the MOT on the REAR wiper....

I've had that recorded on my last three services, but not on any of the three Mot's. However, I have had 'leaking rear differential recorded on an MoT which the dealer has stated during two services as being' fine'.

Yes, I've been told this on numerous occasions too. You'd hardly think it was worth it for a couple of quid.

I might be able to take the advisories more seriously if they were consistent. You'd expect something that was going to need attention soon would be even worse 12 months later but no, it's regenerated itself and doesn't even warrant a mention!

There is something in the indicator bulbs not being orange enough. I know some are basically a white bulb with an orange coating and over time the orange coating flakes off. Consequently the bulb gives off a more white than orange light when it flashes. This is a road traffic offence, hence why it gets picked up by the garage. However I'm not sure how they measure the degree of orangeness v's degree of whiteness.

I was told it was in the opinion of the tester....

I recently had to replace both rear indicator bulbs on our Octavia, they were working fine but were almost as white as the reverse lights.

Closer inspection revealed that the orange coating on the bulb had as above all flaked off and was sitting in a pile inside the light cluster.

I think this is a valid fail sometimes, or are you saying the rear wiper is not part of the MOT?

The rubber splits over time and peels off.

Rear wiper is not part of mot nor is the reverse lights or front fog lights
