4th gear problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Noticed i have a problem when trying to downshift into 4th gear. If i'm going along in 5th or 6th and try and downshift into 4th, the gear stick wont go in as if somethings blocking it. The same happens if i try and go from 4th back into 4th. However it will go from 2nd to 4th and 3rd to 4th absolutely fine, I've also found that if im in 5th or 6th, put the selector in 3rd quickly and then go into 4th it will go in fine?

I've tried to reset the linkages on top of the gearbox but it's not made any difference. all gears go in fine including 4th so long as i'm not trying to downshift. could this be a syncro or selector fork issue? i think either way the gearbox is going to have to be stripped :(

Thanks

Andy

Have you tried double clutching? Maybe it is a faulty synchro.

oh yeah forgot to add double declutching doesnt work either. onyl way it will work is from going into third and then back into 4th again.

If you have already ruled out any gear linkage or clutch problems then it sounds like a dodgy synchromesh inside the gearbox on 4th I'm afraid.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Have booked into JKM next Thursday anyway so hopefully they will be able to help

One thing just came into my mind. If the engine mounts are not in good condition, maybe the gearbox itself has moved a bit from it's normal position causing the issues you are facing. IIRC, you have a mount under the engine, near the gearbox. It might worth a look.

Later edit: Can you up and downshift all the gears when the car is static ? Engine running and / or engine not running ? Does it make any difference at all?

Same as on one of my old gearboxes was the sycros I think.

If you go from 5th to 4th and keep pressure on 4th with the clutch in does it eventually go in?

Thanks for the replies. Have found that double declutch does work if done properly haha. Thinking it's the synchros now too. Gonna be expensive

Ah man that don't sound good at all. Hope you get it sorted quick.

Btw what the hell is double clutching?lol

Double de clutching is clutch down and into neutral, match engine speed with vehicle speed then clutch again and shift into gear.

Just been watching some youtube vids on it.

Quickshift & powershifting too.

Try resetting the linkage first and topping up the oil otherwise the gearbox will have  to come out for reconditioning.

That's the syncro (Dog) rings alright - Mine had this problem from when I got it and I nursed it until it eventually cried enough blew the seals out, siezed and took the centre out of the clutch plate ! The gearbox casing was split so basically it was scrap

I got a replacement box at the time and its not been too bad - It will complain going into second when cold but if you are aware of this you just take your time with the change and it will go in.

You are probably better to go and get the box refurbished as second hand boxes now are a gamble - you could be just as far back as ever !

Given the expense and/or aggro of the labour involved and the age and mileage of these cars now I wouldn't take the risk of a secondhand unit either, I'd replace the clutch while you're at it as well.

Mine has a new clutch. A replacement gearbox or to repair mine is easy £300-500+ then Labour to swap etc. Second hand are £80-100 then fitting. Hard to know what to do now days. I know it’s a gamble with a second hand one, but. Saves a lot of money if it’s a decent box.

Mines on 175k. Just lost 4th going down gears, but fine going up into 4th. New boxes are so costly. Pretty much more than the car is worth 🥴 never know what to do for the best!

That will not have had any connection to the worn synchromesh rings.
