My front fog lights are c**p....

Featured Replies

Driving in slight to very foggy conditions the other morning and noticed my front fog lights  are crap.....

The only real difference I noticed when driving was the sides of the car were illuminated more than with them off which is not much use as i want to see the road ahead.
Completely unfit for the job intended. I even stopped the car and got out to make sure they were working.

So has anyone else had this problem with theirs and what bulbs could I try to see if I can get a better result.
Answers please below

Its not yours, its the nature of them, they are much better than normal lights but no light can change the nature of fog.

I think I read many years back that yellow light penetrated further...not sure it is true and who wants yellow lights on the front of their car...

They're ok when I've had to use them the once. Best I've had were in a mk2 Toledo with projectors; bloody brilliant.

Are you sure the bulbs aren't burnt out? The DRL bulbs in my estate were pretty knackered and had a burnt colour to them. Replaced for LEDs but compared with wifes car and they were much dimmer

In really thick fog a couple of years ago I found the adaptive headlights (On dipped beam) did a better job than the fogs. I was still down to jogging pace a few times to stay within the distance I could see to stop though...

Original bulb ARE c**p. Not only fog, but even in the dark you can hardly see the road. I use only fogs sometimes when it`s snowing and snowflakes are big.

Changed bulbs to Osram Night Breaker Unlimited. Better than before.

I've never used them on any car , I thought they were just for asthestics

Well, if you have snowfall like white wall in front of you, the only way to see it through is to see it under, using fogs.

Exactly..it was better with them switched off.

I have a C Class  Merc and front fogs are great on it, even my 08 plate Mondeo has better front fogs that actually cut through the fog and help you see.

Going to take them our tomorrow and see whats fitted and whats available

Watch this space ....

Linni I take it you have Xenon the same as me.

I am going to change the main bulbs over for Osram as well as I think the main headlights are poor as well.

Any led fog bulbs on eBay ?

First I changed fog light bulbs and then I changed the xenons as well, for Osram Xenarc Cool Blue. It`s more or less ok now. But in my opinion Superb`s low beam is just poor, no matter what bulbs you are using there. Xenarcs made the ditch more visible, but the length of the low beam is still too short.

I found mine quite effective when driving through some awful weather conditions during my commute this winter

Are they different on the facelift?

Might be relative as I don't have the xenon dipped beam although my halogen Superb II lights are vastly superior to the halogen candles I had in my Superb I

The fog lights aren't designed to penetrate the fog, they are supposed to illuminate underneath the fog immediately in front of the car.

As you'd expect they are most effective at night, during the day you aren't going to see much benefit.

Pretty sure i saw somewhere that in a proper pea-souper you're supposed to use the fogs with just side lights so as to illuminate under the fog rather than the dip beam dazzling back off it (Hence why your foglights work with just the sidelights rather than only with dip beam). Must admit this worked a treat once coming home from work a few years ago (when I had my Polo GTi) at 5am on the M18 one autumn morning. Fastest I did was around 30mph on the motorway and nobody else overtook me either so it wasn't me being over cautious either!!!

My previous IS300 had yellow tinted fog lights and in thick fog they did seem to be better than standard white fogs.

I did try replacing the ones in the Superb with some MTEC bright white bulbs but they were shocking and dimmer than the OEM ones. I couldn't even see them illuminating on the cornering function which I can with the OEM ones. I did look at getting some Osram Night Breakers but they didn't do them in the H8 fitting required for the fogs.

And before anyone says it..... That was about 18 months ago since when Osram now do the Night Breakers in H8 fitment. I've just purchased a pair from Powerbulbs for £23.99 delivered with discount code.  :)

The contrast between the yellow halogen fog lights and the much brighter xenons will mean the fog lights always appear less effective to the eye.  I always find that even in poor weather conditions they make little difference.  When I drove Octavias a few years back with just the basic halogen lights, the fogs (presumably with the same type of bulbs as the Superb) appeared much more effective

"SUMMER20" for a twenty percent discount..... There was a banner across the website on every page when I got mine.

Try it anyway though.

***Edit.... The banner is still showing for me***

Ever not seen something right in front of your face before  :x

Ever not seen something right in front of your face before  :x

Oh god yeah!!! :D

I had my first open road drive in fog a month ago, I can confirm they are of little use. In the end I crawled along at 40mph for an hour....

This is nutz - you guys have me hoping for  a bad fog so I can see how good/bad mine are. Probably will take months now....and this is Ireland. Just you wait, its going to be a 3 month windy heatwave when I need to be at dewpoint with a 3kph breeze.
