Cheap tyres - Are they really that bad???

Featured Replies

Have nankangs on the mondeo, seem ok in all conditions. I had Kumho Excsta's on my old BMW, superb in the dry but wet weather was interesting. The mondeo commuter hack I had before was running on the cheapest non remould tyres you could buy, again they were really good on that car.

I would never buy a part worn tyre, you dont know the tyres history or that of the car it came from. The car could have been a write off, and the wheel/tyre badly distorted causing casing damage.

On that thought, do you also never drive hire/courtesy cars?

Didnt notice much of a problem with the Contis on mine in the snow

I used to really rate the Conti Sport Contact IIs on mine until they got down to about the last 1/3rd of the tread (they'll need replacing before 20k I reckon - now on 16k), at which point they seem to have given up on life completely - especially in this bad weather they're awful :thumbdwn: They were a really good all round tyre with 8mm of tread on them :)

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I have just ordered 4 Pirelli P Zero Nero 205/40/17 ZR 84W XL tyres for £66 each from www.mytyres.co.uk

I have heard good reports about this tyre and what a bonus to get it at a budget price!!

Just have to find a decent tyre fitter now that won't charge a fortune to fit!

I can recommend the Nankang NS1's..had those on my old M3 and they were superb!....Falken FK451 also very good had some of those put on my old Puma..and Kumho's are pretty damn good too!...as previously mentioned price is definately not a good indication anymore of how good tyres actually perform!...check out the tyre reviews on autoexpress.co.uk and you'll see what i mean...both Michelin & Pirelli are usually languishing around the bottom.

I've got Kumhos on my Octy and they are pretty good Summer tyres ... but as stated in virtually all the tests they are pretty iffy in winter & the wet. They are good value tyres and if you aren't worried about performance winter tyres I would recommend trying them.

BTW - they were aboslutely pants in the snow we have just had in Kent :D

So is every other tyre in the world (unless they're chained and 4 wd ;)

On the Conti II wear causing it to get a lot worse suddenly - yep that's definitely true - I replaced mine at about 22k, they were still legal but it definitely wasn't inspiring confidence in the wet any longer so I got rid.

I may try some different tyres next time, although the rear tyres are holding up extremely well, still going great at 26k :)

Fair enough :D, although it all relative - the Conti 2s I had were definitely better in the snow than the Kumhos (pants vs absolute pants  )

Had Nankang NS2`s on my old golf GTI and they were better than most tyres ive had, wet or dry it was grippy, better than the standard tyres on my VRS, dont care what anyone says, they are crap really. Plus, if you read up on Nankang, they are actually manufactured by Yokohama, so not all bad!!!!
