Wheel and Tire Upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just upgraded the wheels on my 2015 5E 1.8TSi DSG that come standard with 205 55 R16 and rims that are 6.5 inch wide offset 46 center bore 57.1 to 225 45 R17 Michelin Pilot Sport 3  with wheels by a brand called "Stance wheels" Made in Taiwan  (sold by a wholesale importer in India claims he has knowledge for a decade)  that are 7.5 inch wide and offset of 35 with a center bore of 67.1.

This was done in a hurry (it was dark and raining) hub centric rings made of aluminium machined by a lath locally were installed but I could not check if there was any play or gap between the ring and rim or rotor.

That said the wheels were balanced (can they or are they lug centric or anything else) and alignment carried out with very minor toe adjustment. The installer did a short test drive and adjusted the steering which was a little cross (to the right) and all seemed perfect at city speeds of about 40-60 kmph. I did not want to drive hard as the tires were new and thought of following a decent break in period.

Later I drove at highway speeds around 90-110 kmph very slowly building speed and to my horrific surprise there was a sudden and constant vibration from the steering wheel, pedals as well as the floor of the car and it only increased as I built speed forcing me to slow down and stay below 80kmph  :peek: I was devastated because my car was driving perfectly fine before the upgrade and hate meddling with something that works fine.

My Questions :

1. Have I messed up with the wrong offset (ET) of the rim. (14mm positive scrub) when I do a wheel size.com comparison. Skoda recommends a 49 offset with 7J width

2. If so can a spacer help?

3. I am looking to improve handling and corner better than before use the Michelins grip and explore their potential hence I went ahead with this upgrade.

3. Is this the cause of the vibration or could it be the hub centric rings are of low quality.

4. Am i jeopardising wear and tear of bearings & suspension with this setup.

The rims and tires do not stick out and fill the fender a little there is enough gap between suspension breaks wheel well etc. no rubbing whatsoever.

I am heartbroken and have read a lot about this but everyones setup is unique hence the newbie questions. Please Help!

Thanks in ADvance!

The first thing I would do is have the wheels rebalanced. It is not uncommon for a balance to be slightly bad.

vibration will either be balance or poor fitment (spigot rings not effective in centering the wheel) or the wheel or tyre is out of shape.

ET is too low. a spacer would make it worse.

I think you know the answer already though - done in a hurry in the dark? Put your OEM wheels on and i expect your problem will go away.

If i were in your shoes i'd take the new rims and tyres back to the supplier and get them swapped for somethign with the correct et and bore. No reason why you should need to **** around with spigot rings IMO.

+1 for what Rob said.

I would have been worried when they had to adjust the steering just for fitting new wheels....

This is another reason (apart from it being a legal requirement in Europe) I would always stick to the manufacturer recommended width/ET/tyre sizes.

The steering adjustment what I meant is that when I changed to the RS flatbottom with paddles the skoda workshop fit it a little cross to the right. This was rectified.

I have strictly stuck to this upgrade recommended by this link  http://www.wheel-size.com/size/skoda/octavia/2015/#trim-18tsi-eudm  has all the data of the 5E wheel size WRT to tires.

I am planning to do this one last time on a road force balancing machine.

Why did you have hub centric rings (spigot) made up? Why not just buy some from eBay ? They could be your problem

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222138611667

These would take at-least 20 days to arrive from the UK to India.

There are none ready available here. Skodas are not very common here.

Exactly Rob

The spigot rings are not helping and the precision achieved here is not enough or tapered correctly. NO rings for me ever.

ET is low and a spacer can only be used if the case was opposite.

Its back to the OEM for now.

Here's an update: The earlier wheels were completely wrong and I have tried to return/exchange them for the correct size but have not been able to convince the dealer. He seems to have washed his hands of.

All said and done a lesson learnt at a fairly high cost which no one should endeavor. More on that later because it deserves documentation!

I visited the service centre for a strange noise from my wheel (bearing worn out) Replacement of LHS sunvisor (broken by service centre replaced FOC) and Free Wax.

The dealer happened to have some wheels available and they happen to match the exact recommended upgrade to 17".

Would like your advise on this.

"Copied from Skoda website".

"Elegance and dignity are the main attributes of the 17“ Venus wheels. (Not really I plan to repaint them "Elephant Grey" or black colour)

Products details:

Weight: 10.50 kg
Number of bolts: 5
Wheel dimensions: 7.0J x 17“, ET 49
Pitch circle diameter: 112 mm
Wheel centring hole diameter: 57 mm     (Clarify does a CBD of 57.1mm take a 57mm rim CB)

Designed for cars:
Superb II (produced from 2008 to 2014) with 225/45 R17 tyres  I have the Michelin PS3 in the same size.

Can someone please tell me if this is the right upgrade.

I checked in the wheel/tire calculator   :here:  http://www.wheel-size.com/size/skoda/octavia/2015/#trim-18tsi-eudm

Meanwhile I discovered a worn out wheel bearing.

Took it to dealership only to realise it is worn out and I was right.

Loud humming/helicopter sound when checked on the lift. Waiting for the part to arrive under warranty replacement.

Have parked the car and will manage with the Fabia 1.4PD till they contact me for the part.

Your help please!

Thanks a ton!

Bump! Any advise :)

1) No, the offset should be fine.

2) No, that will make the offset even lower (the wheel will stick out more).

3) Good for you.  You could have just upgraded the 16" tyres (better idea in India) but 17" is OK.  Personally, I would have fitted 235/45r17 but you have chosen the OEM size which is a logical choice.

3) (you put two 3s).  I'd bet my right nut the home grown hub centric rings are the issue.  They need to check the clearance at the hub (make sure they don't sit proud) and the level of tolerance they have made them to.  They really need to be within 0.05mm of the specification.

I don't agree with the others about not using spigot rings.  It's a common practice with the cheaper aftermarket wheels.  I've used spigot rings on 3 of the 5 sets of wheels I've had on my Octy.

You need to go back to basics with this.

Make sure the wheels are running true.  Stance aren't a bad wheel, so they should be OK.

Check the hub rings fit properly and do their job.  They should be a tight slide fit over the hub and a really tight hand press into the wheel.

Check the tyre is seated on the bead properly and has no runout or odd bumps.

Check the wheel balance.  If they are good wheels & tyres there should be no more than 50gms of weight on the rim.

Make sure they tighten the wheel nuts to the correct torque (120nm) with a torque wrench using the 2 step method.

If they can't get it right after that then tell them to shove the wheels and tyres where the sun don't shine and demand a full refund.

4) No, that's a fairly conservative setup and should work well.

edit: /reads whole thread.

Yes, those wheels will fit but it won't be much of an upgrade over 16x6.5.  Stick with the tallest sidewall you can in India.
