Soft modding an XBox

Featured Replies

Just traded my old PS2 for an XBox and I am about to soft mod it and use it as a media centre. Anyone else done this???? Saw my mates and was well impressed with it, stick a 160Gb HDD in it and et voila.

Don't u have to chip it ?

i thought to use your xbox as a media centre you have to have it chipped, you can soft mod it to allow you to change the xbox to ntsc thus allowing you to get high def pictures from the xbox if you use the hidef pack

u call also load linux on it without chipping

Which could then run a media server app perhaps?

That is pretty much what happens with the soft mod  The dashboard gets changed and you then have acees to various media type stuff :D All you need is:

A Copy of Spliter Cell, Mech Assault or 007 Agent Under Fire (Not classic version)

An action replay (or bodge one)

A copy of the relevant saves for the game you choose and the directions fromhttp://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=215055

I sold my PS2 and bought an xbox 360, as a mediacenter extender its no good as it only outputs at 60hz meaning video clips and recorded TV is all jumpy due to the conversion from 50 to 60hz. As a games console its the best 279 I spent.

Dont forget that messing about with chips and an xbox will mean your xbox is barred from using xbox live.

If you use an xecutor you have an on / off switch at the front m8, you can still use x-box live with the chip switched off, it just runs like a normal x-box (insert disk etc etc)

Fluff'

i'm sure the guy at work uses xbox live with his chipped box, think he uses some software on the xbox to do it?

Softmodding means no chip :D And you can use XBox live

Go for the xecuter, they are great. I've been installing them for ages and never had any problems.

Why chip it when you can soft mod it easier and iwth less hassle??

My XBox has an Xecutor chip and runs Evolution X software with no problems. Can confirm XBox Live can be accesed with the mod chip switched off. If you 'soft mod' your box can you play different area discs i.e. USA?

I'd definately recommend the executer X3CE, it works like a dream and is a doddle to fit.

You don't have to rely on a bodge in software for it to work and you can turn it off by holding the power switch in for a couple of seconds.

Baldbouncer sells the chips and you can then put linux or whatever you want on it.

XBMC i believe is the media player of choice.

I run XBMC and it is good. With regards to a bodge in the software  I prefered to do it this way as it was easier than taking the xbox to bits. And I can choose to be modded or not depending on if I power on with the tray or the on off button
