Anyone buying 1.4 TSI?

Looking at early Octavia 3s and not totally set on engine, but much as I have liked the 1.9 PD, I'm not so sure about the modern (DPF) diesels

 

For all the enthusiasm I am seing for the 1.4 TSI Octy 3, there don't seem to be many second hand ones about. Did no one buy them? is everyone holding on to them? is the middle not appealing (you either want a 1.2 TSI or a VRS)?  have more folk started buying them since the VAG diesel emissions debacle?

I had several Octy soot chuckers but when my annual mileage declined to around 5k I decided to go back to petrol power.

Had a 1.4tsi DSG Elegance estate for 2 years. Loved it. No problems with it except for road noise (but not the booming reported by some other owners luckily) and less than magic carpet ride.

So upgraded to a a C Class Merc. My son bought the Octy. I wouldnt sell it to the dealer as the residuals are terrible. This is an Octy 3 issue generally and not just the 1.4 tsi.

My opinion is that its a great engine. But sold in (relatively) small numbers hence your difficulty in procuring a second hand one.

I bought a used one from late 2013 and really like the engine.

Diesels have been all the rage until the scandal, so yes not many sold.

The 2013 should be coming off there pcps now so there should be more around soon.

AS I've said a lot  (!) I went from my 6 year old Mk. 2 1.8 TSi to 2014 1.4 TSi, manual, with some misgivings till I test drove one. It felt much the same as my 1.8.

Since then it often surprises me at its responsive acceleration, like a much bigger engine (though I do leave the engine in sport mode.)

 

Add to that great economy in MPG (nearly all short, town drives, averaging about 40 from new), road tax,(£30) insurance and maintenance (has never needed oil apart from the usual  oil change at its first service.) 

Have never had to add coolant either. Tyres hardly ever seem to need more air.

All I do is top up the screen wash !!!

Had mine for just over a year and can't really fault it. Mine's mated to the DSG auto and it's a really strong combination - averaging just over 43mpg (by my own tank-to-tank measure) and very happy with performance and quietness. That said, I can understand why the engine's power has gone up from the 138bhp of mine to 148bhp in the latest models - muscle was adequate before and should be comfortable now.

It's no VrS of course, but that's not what the 1.4 is there for. Pick it in SE spec (whuch has a taller tyre profile) and you have the best way of overcoming the lumpy ride which comes with a torsion beam back axle - the only real weak link in the Octavia's armour.

Of the 1,4 TSIs a high proportion are DSG, understand a lot of folk like them but I prefer manual.

 

Probably right enough about the tyres, my current Octavia2 has  205 x 55 x 16 which I recon is a good compromise for a family car - also Tyres a fair bit cheaper than for 17".

 

Have to confess I do like some of the Elegance goodies - particularly arm rest,  cruise control and automatic dipping mirror - I know hardly enough to justify the extra expense, but then at 3+ years old difference in cost between SE and Elegance not that great.

I agree that, having the SE now,  I missed some of the aspects of my previous 1.8 TSi Mk. 2 Elegance. Mainly the cruise (though only used it on runs up to London etc) and the CD multi disc  player in the boot. Now I have the single player I haven't used it once. The different prices when I bought new, Oct. 2014, I felt the Elegance wasn't then worth the difference. But then again the Octy has somewhat lost its original value for money glow! My 1.8 TSi Elegance manual hatch in 2008 was a bit over £12000, the 2014 1.4 TSi was over £19000

Not many around? Right now there are 58 1.4s up to three years old and under £14k on Skoda's used car finder, of which 41 are manual. And that's only Skoda's own website. OK, the might not be on your doorstep.

 

The 1.4 with or without DSG is a reasonably fast and quite economical engine - over 10k miles in my DSG I managed over 41mpg, with a best tankful of over 50mpg and a worst of 33. Most around 39. And the DSG is cheaper to tax - DEPENDING ON WHEELS AND TYRES - than the manual. Only £30.

Not many around? Right now there are 58 1.4s up to three years old and under £14k on Skoda's used car finder.

Budget more like £12000, there are 3 in Scotland within this budget and all at other end of the country.

There are 9     1.6 CRs  and at least some are just 120 miles away.

Well, Octy, if you want quality you have to be prepared to put in some effort! :)

 

I had a 1.6 diesel with DSG for a day recently, did around 100 miles, and it compares well with the 1.4 petrol. Not quite as fast, slightly more economical, and the DSG saves all the gearstick action. I wouldn't have a diesel without an auto box.

A good alternative to the petrol.

Just guessing now - you wouldn't happen to be living some place where you could see several within a 100 mile radius? 

1.4TSI is likely to have seen lower sales numbers than diesel versions, but perhaps that trend is changing now. Having said that, depending on your budget you're looking at 2-3yr old examples perhaps - so pre 'dieselgate'.

Yes and Arnold Clark had one in Edinburgh that looked nice on net but the sunroof really put me off (think it is reserved or sold now anyway) - Yes I know, some folk love them and somebody paid lots for it not that long ago. Same thing with DSG for me. I know the 1.4 TSI is not the scarcest thing on earth, just scarce compared to the 1.6 CR - of which there is a massive choice.

 

I suppose depending on your angle you could say scarce or alternatively unpopular for the 1.4 TSI

For the 1.6 CR - popular or common.

I bought a new 1.2 SE last year when I failed to find second hand cars for much less than the price at which online brokers were offering new cars. New 1.2 SE Estates were available for 15k a year ago, which was 20% off the list price. The new car obviously has a number of advantages over the very early model 2013 cars that were available at the time.

Yep - CH1 postcode.  Four main dealers within 30 miles!

VAG make various different 1.4 engines all of which are available in the VAG group. However certain countries pick different ones for different models.

 

1.4 made in 122PS (now 125PS), or 140PS (now 150PS) are the two same base engines, you might get ACT on the 150PS version as some come with it, some do not.

 

Main difference is the larger turbo & both camshafts are variable for the 140/150PS versions.

140/150PS version is only in GT & R line spec trim level, the others (S, SE, Match)  get the 122/125PS

Both my Octy2's have been 1.4TSi Elegance models with DSG and I have been very satisfied with both. No problems apart from a couple of little niggles that were put right under warranty - nothing engine or gearbox problem though.

Just been looking to change and surprised at the really poor trade in value so intend keeping it for a while longer.

Well if you jump on the ferry you can get a drive in my 1.4 SEL 150 which I bought last year!

I came from 1.9PD passat (via a few other cars) to a 1.6TDI octy 3.

I've not had any dpf issues, other than the obvious regens it does on its own.

I think the only real annoyance i've had was when it did the full annoying fans as i arrived home at around midnight. Ironically after a 3 hour mile munching journey.

 

I was of the same mindset as yourself and fancied the 1.4, purely because i don't regularly do big miles anymore. The relative scarcity meant that the pricing was no where near as keen / negotiable as the 1.6 even when i was prepared to travel.

 

It seems strange that a 1.4 (which was cheaper at point of sale) was on average £1.5K more second hand on alike for like basis.
