More bass (SQ, not SPL!)

Featured Replies

I'm reasonably happy with the ICE in my Fabia but if there's one thing lacking it's a bit of bass.

I still want a boot and a spare wheel etc, so has anyone junked the rear speakers and/or fitted small subs into the void above and around the rear wheelarch area? Maybe using the existing speaker grille as a port for getting the sound into the cabin...

I've seen 5" small subs around and about. I think JL do some.

I've never heard of these 5" sub's but i'd be interested. You may be oversimplifying the porting idea though. Ports have to be designed for optimum performance. You can substantially reduce the effectiveness of a sub by porting it incorrectly or extending the built in ports. I like the idea though.

8" sub in the boot won't take up too much space... you could even mould it (or a 10") into the side of the boot...

Might be wrong on the sub. sizing...

JL Audio do a 6" sub. but CAD have sold out as they had them on sale. They have to be enclosed.

Genesis do 6"x9" subs meant for parcel shelf installation.

A pair of well built quality 5.25" woofers in the front doors make a lot of difference over standard (for me) - I'd imagine a similar setup in the back would be good. The existing 10cm woofers back there are seriously pants, which is why I have my setup faded quite a way up front, to let the good speakers do the work. :)

With good front door woofers, the need for subs has diminished. The air moved by my front woofers is enough to shake my trouser legs, even from 12" away or so.

Stay away from shelf mounted 6x9's except for providing some rear fill. For sub-bass a bass driver in a suitably design ported enclosure is the way to go. You can get them in all shapes/sizes or make one yourself but if the calcs aren't done then the results may be poor as the enclosure and speaker must be matched.

Focal do the 5in subs.

if you dont want ground shaking bass and just a bit more bottom end I would be tempted with some 6x9 subs I hate recommending 6x9s but some manufacturers do some fairly decent ones. The other option that I had very briefly in my old focus was an 8" in the footwell in a small fibreglass enclosure, a grille over the top with carpet over that so it never got damaged by a passenger. Added some depth. If you choose your crossover frequencies right then the bass can be non directional so you woulndt know it was coming from there...

food for thought

I think the choice is between 6x9 subs in some form of open or ported enclosure (kenwood system or Genesis amp& 6x9 subs). Alternative is Focal (5") or JL Audio (6") small subs in boxes.

Either way I think the rear speakers would have to go to preserve boot space and allow the subs to play or port through into the cabin.

I've got a kenwood 6x9 sub thingy going into my other car, so I'll wait and see/hear how that goes.
