Aircon - Poor performance when warm

Featured Replies

When we had a warm spell in May I realized that the AC might not be too great. So I got a friend who has access to the KwikFit Aircon tool to recharge the Gas. So he checked it, and the gas Level was actually fine (390g left out of 500 or so, IIRC). Anyway, it was re-gassed, and then checked performance.

The coldest he could come get out of the vent after the recharge was around 15.7 degrees. He mentioned that most other cars would be closer to 10 degrees, and that some older (non climate control cars) could even get as low as 2-3 degrees. He checked compression, and it was perfectly fine (10 bar, IIRC). He There were also no leaks or any other problems the machine could detect. Anyway, good weather was gone, and I left it at that at the time.

Now I am in Italy, and realize that I must have a major Issue with the Aircon. When the car is cold, and when the weather is not too warm yet I can feel cold Air coming out. But as soon as the temperature gets up there is hardly any cold Air coming out of the Vents anymore, and it is very unpleasant (especially with 2 kids in the back). Anyway, when I open the Windows it feels as if the Temp coming from the Vents seems to go down again. Really strange.

One thing i found is that the Dash gets really really hot. It seems to give off a lot of temperature on it's own. Could it possibly also affect the Aircon pipes (i.e. warm up the Aircon pipes before it even gets to the Vent). Is that normal, or could it be part of the problem?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I had a similar problem on mine, the car was delivered in the December so really did not set the temp low until some nice weather appeared and then found it would just not cool and it sounded like a blockage behind the dash as no air came out of the front vents when cooler temps were selected. The garage eventually found the fault which was the flaps / motor which control the air behind the glove box.

Hmmm. doesn't sound right - at 30c+ the other day (in sunlight, not shade) I had it set a 18c and it was great. Have you checked the recirculation is permanently engaged? Have you tried pressing the recirc button and see if the sound of the incoming air changes? Is quite obvious if it is working ok; once its off the air-rush sound greatly diminishes. Worth a go?

Flap motor stuck probably - needs resetting in vagcom more than likely. Could also be the fan on the aircon rad but doubt it

If it's the fan the air con won't work at all the same If the pressure is too high or too low . It's to stop it self destructing

You could try a flap recalibration. Hold down "AC" and "face vent" button until lights start flashing. Each flap servo will go through it's full motion and reset its endpoints. Might help. Should only take 30 seconds or so. If the lights are still flashing after 90 secs then there's an issue with one of your flaps - either physically stuck or actuator fried. Hope that helps.
