Engine oil query

Btw, the vw507 oil is used for vehicles with DPF and AFAIK , the models coming India don't have DPF.

Can anyone help me figure out if my car has DPF? Is it possible to decode the VIN to get this info

VW 507 specification also includes the previous VW specs for nearly all TDI engines. With the exception of the V10 TDI in the Touareg and one other (I can't recall off the top of my head), all previous vehicles can run with VW507 spec oil.

Hmm, There is actually quite a lot of confusion here .. (I'm almost thinking if skoda india is doing massive cost cutting here.)

So the main point for me is to know if my car is running DPF or not,

http://www.oilspecifications.org/articles/vw_motor_oil_specifications_explained.php

According to that link if my car is not running DPF then i can use any of the following: 505.[00/01], 506.[00/01], 507.00

So I just need to figure out if i have DPF or not.

Question: Is it possible to decode the VIN to get this info?

I'm unsure what the issue is really. You can use VW507, it's the latest specification, the best overall oil, and will cover any eventuality. Why would you want to use an older specification, which is less of an oil overall, simply because you can? That's rather like saying "I can get good quality diesel from the local filling station, but if I hunt around a bit i could get some poor quality diesel which would probably be okay. Yes, that's what I'll do, look for some crap fuel."

But if you really want to know if your car has a DPF, the DPF light will come on briefly when you turn the ignition on if there's a DPF fitted.

Why don't you just use whatever it says in your manual? (Which is probably the VW507 everyone's been going on about. Lots of oil companies make VW507 compliant oil. It will say somewhere in the smallprint on the back of the bottle.)

I guess the overall problem was not made clear by me..

In India at least the service centre here and all aftermarket shops don't stock any engine oil from any brand that conforms to vw507.00
