Engine oil query

Featured Replies

I drive an A7 diesel automatic.

Today while doing my weekly check I realised that the oil level was low.

(The dip stick shows only half of it is covered in oil).

I did some searching and found that the diesel automatic uses something called 'vw 507.00'.

I bit more of searching and found that it equates to 5w30.

Skoda India recommends only castrol.

Can anyone please let me know if I have to buy 5w30 or 5w40 ?, And if they are indeed the same as vw507.00 grade ( whatever the heck that is).

vw507.00 is low ash I believe which is supposed to be reccomended for the DPF.

VW Oil specification is VW507.00. Previous oil specifications are (diesel) VW506.01, VW506.00, VW505.01, VW505.00, and (petrol) VW502.00, VW501, etc. and none are suitable for your car. You need an oil which carries VW507.00 specification on the bottle, and that's generally 5w30 weight. So you need an oil which is 5w 30 weight and VW507.00 specification. Most oils nowadays are VW504.00 / VW507.00 which means they're suitable for petrol and diesel engines, but you can ignore the VW504 part as not relevant.

Castro edge is the stuff that is 507 compliant.

castrol edge is just one oil which meets the requirements. There are many others which are also to VW504/507 specification...

I'm actually a patron of mobil1 and xado.

However since my car is brand new And I don't want to lose the warranty just yet I'm having to stick to castrol that's all.

Anyway I will go and search for edge 5w30 should be easily available everywhere.

Thanks a lot for your responses folks..

Quick update,

I went around the city trying to find edge 5w30(looks like it's semi-synthetic).

I just could not find it so picked up castrol gtx 5w30(it's quoted to be used only for petrol).

Any idea if I use it for top up?

The Skoda helpline says I can use 5w30 or 5w40 .I have no idea how that's possible.

Kindly advice

Do not use that oil. It's not the required specification. Again, look for an oil which has the VW507. specification on the bottle Nothing else. If it's 5w 30 (and it should be) then that's all you need to know. Any oil which carries the VW507 spec is suitable (note some oils say they meet the requirements of VW504/507 which actually means they haven't been approved by VW, but the makers think it would pass the procedure if they paid VW to test it for them and give them authorisation as such)

Mobil 1 ESP carries the correct VW504/507 specification and is a superior oil to castrols effort.

Se here. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-6362-mobil-1-esp-5w-30-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

Under the specifications it states

  • Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following builder approvals:
    • BMW Longlife 04
    • MB-Approval 229.31/229.51
    • Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel) 504 00 / 507 00

and others also. Further it states it meets or exceeds other specifications, which are irrelevant as the ONLY spec you need to be concerned about it VW507.

Thanks for the quick response. Even I had a doubt since there was no vw507.00 rating on it but rather it was just another 5w30.

Let me see if I can source that oil.

What surprised me was Skoda helpline tells me to use 5w30 or 5w40.

I don't know how

5W 30 or 5W 40 is the weight specification of the oil (the viscosity if you like). All oils will have a viscosity rating, and either 5w 30 or 5w 40 is what is usually used in VAG engines (occasionally 0W 30). The actual oil specification (the suitability of the oil to lubricate as it's supposed to in any particular engine) is down to the engine manufacturers to make sure the engine is lubricated correctly. This is what the VW504/507 (petrol and diesel respectively) is for. So it's most important to use the correct specification oil, then use the correct wieght of that specification. Usually VAGs VW504/507 oils are 5W 30.

if you put non 507.00 oil in a car with a DPF the life of the DPF will be reduced because of the higher ash content in these oils. 507.00 is designed with the DPF in mind, and is the one to use.

My advice would be just to go to a VW/Skoda/Audi/Seat garage & buy 1 litre of top-up oïl from there.

It might be a slightly more expensive that you can find it somewhere else but you are not refilling the whole engine, you only need 300-400ml to put the dipstick up to top from halfway.

You know it will be the correct oïl, keep the reciept in case there are any problems in the future.

The OEM products are usually cheaper than you would expected & typically much better quality than the "own brand" stuff you would get from large autochains.

and when buying from eBay theres always a chance its going to be chip-fat in a bottle with a nice sticker on it... :D

I will visit the dealership this week and get the recommended oil.

Thanks for your responses guys

Ah, missed the India bit!

It is a good idea to be wary about fake oil bought online, but there are few trusted sellers of the Quantum now.

Oh guys, guess what.

I called up the service centre and they clearly advised me to use castrol synthetic 5w40.

There is no chance in hell that it has the necessary vw rating nectar I've already checked and refused to use it... lol
