I see many cars I would be interested in but for the presence of a remap.    Do most places charge to remove their software?        Don't really want to have t fork out on top of the purchase of a vehicle.

IIRC the Revo maps needs removing by Revo whereas the others aren't quite so 'difficult'! I am willing to be corrected though.

As I understand it, unless it was installed by something like an STS unit, what you end up with is another remap, but this time to match the original specifications (a downmap?). This is how the STS works: it remaps back the original mapping that is stored in the STS's memory. Whilst I suspect this is a walk in the park for most remappers, it's still time and money.

 

If it's one of the "in-line" tuning boxes, then it's quite literally a case of unplug and play.

Best thing is to ask the sellers themselves whether they could take care of that for you and I imagine that most of them would be willing to do it if that meant a sale going through. They definitely won't be charged from their tuner to remove a remap that has already been paid for. You showing up to a tuner and asking for work yes it's a different story and they might ask you to pay. My advice would be don't get discouraged just by the fact there's a tune on and speak to the current owner.

 

Although If you don't want the extra power you should probably just focus on stock cars. A remapped engine means extra worries (possibly) for no benefit in exchange for you.

You might buy what you believe to be a standard unmapped vehicle and it has a remap,

So maybe a Latest Software Update at a Main Dealer or Independent is worth budgeting for.

 

A used vehicle might not be on Factory Settings for Steering Assist, Brake Assist etc, 

& even Main Dealers do not check or reset before selling on, so again you maybe want this checked to see what you have bought.

People with the 'Gear & an Idea might do this for you.

I'm not too sure that I'd agree with that as the same amount of (chargeable) time is involved no matter what's uploaded to the ECU!

Technically yes but according to my experience most tuners would accept to remove their tunes FOC. Most of them don't provide any sorts of engine warranty anyway but they do tell you that if at any point you don't like it/worry about it they can revert the car to stock. That was the case with mine at least as well as with another tuner that I had asked (but didn't go with at the end) whether that'd be possible.
