Old vRS / New vRS

Featured Replies

Been to my local dealer today to arrange a test drive in the new Octavia vRs. Sat in the showroom a brand new Silver Octavia vRS with parking sensors and cruise, but it's the old model. The New vRS is box standard apart from 18" rubber and is selling for around

at that price take the old one!! A bargin if i ever saw one! Imagine all the goodies you can get with the 5k saving....

1)Insurance

2)Load of accessories

3)Strut Brace

4)Remap... if you dont like your warranty!

5)Proper Alarm system

And on the old one u'll have rear electric windows!!!

You stand a good chance of losing the saving come resale time though, and the MKII Octy ihas a massively better quality interior too.

But at Furby money you can't be robbed really - drive both and decide if the new one is 1/3 better.

I understand what your saying. I like the old Interiour and the old vRS is quite a nice looking car. I once owned a 51 plate vRS so I know what they go like.

A fully Kitted MK5 GTI is almost £25,300 with a £10 saving, Woo Hoo! at www.drivethedeal.co.uk and thats without Sat Nav!

A Fully Kitted vRS with Satnav is £20,547 saving £1512 on list!!!!

So I think it is quite a bargain!!!!!

i'd take the old one personally. The new vRS does not excite me the way as the MKI did.

For me it's a no-brainer. Old one! The new one is absolutely not worth £5K more! If it was £2K I'd get the new one. IMHO the old one looks a bit better too.

You can get a brand new WRX for under £16K if you shop around...

old one...never owned or driven either, but the old one looks better and you'll have an extra 5k! :D

If you really need a bigger car, then the new one is a far nicer place to be than the old one, but I couldn't look you in the eye and agree it was a

It's not just the case of winding down the rear windows for 17/18K i'd expect rear leccy windows................Anyone know the insurance group please????.

Also if you want to be able to stand listening to some tunes you'd need to spend a bit on speakers/HU replacement as the Octy I has pretty terrible standard stuff in that regard.

A lot depends on if you wanna keep warranty. If you're not that bothered, get the Mk1, tune it, and you'll have great fun :)

I agree that the old one still looks better (the Mk2 grille is a bit odd), although the new one is, thankfully, not a lot different anyway!

Re-mapped the Mk1 is quite a beast.

I don't regret buying mine.

I really can't understand your statement. I put a CD in and music come from the speakers. I can hear it, I can tell what it is and it doesn't crackle and there's no distress to the ears....

I probably couldn't win a sound-off at the McDs Drive-Thru, but then again I don't care!

Maybe he is an audiophile who cares about the quality of his sound?

In which case, neither system is likely to satisfy...

The new one is better no doubt and the quality is a step up IMO.

If you have the cash, I would deffo get the new one! If cash is not so readily available and value for money is higher on the agenda, then the old one is a bargain!

To be honest, both are bargains and are wise choices

The old one was cr&p - worse than the standard POS in the Rover 100.

I'm not into spending large sums of money on ICE, but it's got to be good enough ;)

I'm still puzzled what the problem is with the 'ICE'. I certainly don't drive my car and wish I had a diferent system.

Ok, so I'm not sure why there's a cassette player and if I listened to a quality system immediately before I may notice a difference, but the sound is clear and the sound doesn't deteriorate to a noise when you travel at speed... A Rover 100 would need a good sound to drown out the rest of the noise!

My old W reg 1.4S Polo had a much better sound system than the Octy I vRS. It's down to the speakers ATEOTD. They provide too much vibration at anything above number 8 and sound tinny and crap.

Like the majority of posters on this thread, I have never driven the new vRS. It's down to you to drive the beast and decide whether it's worth 5K extra.

There's obviously a reason why the price of a brand new MK1 vRS has been reduced by 3K since it was launched in 2001.

The 2.0T FSI engine is one of VW's best ever products. It can easily be tuned to 250BHP and the price of tuning is dropping staedily in response to increasing demand.

my advice would be to try something new and better quality. If you don't like it, I pretty much guarantee that Octy II vRS's will be in high demand by second hand purchasers, so they will hold their value.

Most motoring mags recognise the new vRS as being better than the MK 5 Golf GTI in terms of interior space, quality and equal in dynamics. The old vRS may have been a cult car, but the new one will take it overground and attract a lot more buyers IMO.

A Rover 100 needs something that can put out a fair bit of volume to get above the engine for sure - point is & was that the Octy I standard ICE install is terrible. It doesn't need to put at high volume at motorway speeds, but even at low volume it sounds tinny.

Either way, nothing a little speaker upgrade won't sort for little money :)

I don't think the old Octy vRS ICE is that bad, not when compared against the "standard" head units across the VAG range. And like somebody said, if you're that bothered about the audio the standard unit in the new Octy vRS is hardly likely to do the job either.

There is no doubt the new vRS is a better car than the old one, but in terms of a performance bargain with decent space and equipment the old one wins every time - and at the price of the new vRS you can buy a lot of other cars which are just as quick.

Five grand'll buy a pretty good aftermarket radio!

They provide too much vibration at anything above number 8 and sound tinny and crap.

How loud do you need it? :)

I bought a used Mk1 as it cost much less than half the price of a new one and I'm very pleased with it. Yes the Mk2 will be better in some ways, but the brand new cars are a lot more expensive.
