CCTV @ Home ??

Featured Replies

Anybody here using CCTV ??

If you are is it standalone or connected to your PC.

I am looking into having a couple of camera's for home, with the new vRS coming I can't use my Garage(too small) so I thought I would get some protection from CCTV.

What equiptment you using ??

Where did you buy it ??

Any problems setting up ??

The last vRS suffered a couple of times from people nicking the valve caps & wheel nut covers - nothing major but I don't want it with the new one!!

I have 1 fixed night vision camera for the front of the house and 2 wireless cameras at the side/rear of the house. I use a 4 channel PCI capture card.

Where did you buy it ??

All bought off Ebay.Hong Kong's finest. Capture card and software £18, fixed camera £30 and wireless cameras £25 each.

Any problems setting up ??

Yes lots.

The software that came with the capture card is very unstable. It has great potential with remote access and motion sensing etc but it crashes regulatrly. Most of the capture cards are generic with the only differences being quality. Mine is fine but i'm looking for better software at the moment.

It might be better to pay £100 or so and go for a Trust card or something. At least you would have comeback.

The night vision camera is excellent but when the leds came on in the dark you could see a halo effect around the image. Turned out to be scratches on the glass cover in front of the lens. I just inserted a strip of card between the IR leds and the camera lens and that sorted it. The wireless cameras are great when they work. Range isn't bad but it's very easy to disturb the tuning dial thus knocking the picture out. I toyed with actually putting one of these 'in' the car so i could record a thief in action but the transmitter controls are just too sensitive to put up with the motion of a car so you would have to set it up everytime you come home. As you can imagine, my CCTV sytem is currently out of action but thats also partially due to the motherboard on the CCTV PC blowing up the other day. In the process of building a new machine to run CCTV and hopefully X10 home automation.

I had a few problems in the past too, but found the answer was light. I don't believe there's anything better than a well set up high powered security light...

Have you got one?

Got a couple of

Sounds good, anyone else using CCTV and how did you set it up etc?

Any CCTV fitters members of Briskoda who could help us out?

Umm probably should - but I hate them with a vengence -- they are a bloody nightmare -- both my neighbours have them, and when they set them off its light blackpool bloody illuminations -- and no one takes any notice !!

From what I see with our CCTV in work -- the best picture we have is a night vision camera at the rear -- which works brilliantly even though there is very little light in the area it covers.

It so happens that the offices facing where I live have 4 colour CCTV cameras with High power IR lamps. I think the overspill of the IR light into the street from their cameras has a lot to do with the good performance of my night vision camera. The leds are only really any good close up to the subject ie directly over doors etc but I can get a view right out to the roadside night or day.

I agree that floodlights are the way to go to improve the performance of the cameras. They are a great deterent in themselves and if the camera is close to the light then a would-be burglar wouldn't be able to spot it either.

You do have to be careful about blindspots though. We had burglars at our offices. They smashed all of the security lights so the cameras couldn't see a thing. Got away with 4 laptops, 2 digital cameras, a mobile phone and a pile of Cd's.

The problem with CCTV is if the criminal has his face covered all you get to see is what/how they did it, so in the case of having one to watch the new car the very most I would expect to get out of the CCTV is a nice video of my car been driven off my drive by the one who nicked it, however that said it may help oppertunist thefts but not professionals.

Act as though your starting in the CCTV game, make up a name "J. Brown Electrical" will do.

Ask for a catalogue, it'll tell you all you want to know & more!

Give it a go

If you go by the book, you ought to be careful with CCTV stuff bought in Hong Kong. It may well be transmitting in FM (for which you need a licence) or using frequencies that will upset the local CB / radio station / plod. Also, any unencrypted wireless connection is succeptible to hacking / evesdropping.

Me paranoid? Never :P
