Engine/Drivetrain life

Featured Replies

Im thinking about a Jabba remap again on a Furby Vrs, cos im planning on keeping this Vrs for about 5 years instead of 1 year with my previous Furby, wot sort of mileage could i expect to get from a remapped Vrs?

ColG has put a few thousand on his, remapped. :) I plan to go for more than 5 years with mine in current tune. Looked after, I would expect engine life to be as normal. - Might just be a few more parts and bits done along the way until the final BANG! ;)

How old will your engine be?

87k remapped miles on mine to date......

Less than 2 years old though

A lot of it depends on how sensible you are with your remap, stuff like right gear for the job, using slightly better oil perhaps, letting the turbo cool down after a hard run, all that kinda stuff. Some parts of the car will probably wear a little quicker but as long as you stay on top of things it shouldn't be a problem :)

Would expect engine life to be shortened if it's running more power as all the components will be working harder than before, especially things like the turbo which will be running higher boost. There is also the gearbox, DMF and drivetrain which will be suffering from increased torque....! Didn't Col post a thread up of all the things he'd broken?

The last furby Vrs that i Had jabbed came out with about 185Bhp and about 310lbs of torque i think, would this be classed as sensible or sould i be looking at a lower figure to preserve engine/gearbox life.

Thanks to all that have replied,

Ps I know its not the right forum to ask this, but is there any chance of a Cumbrian Meet?

I'm not sure there's an answer to that! It will shorten the life over standard, but it probably won't pack up tomorrow! ;) How long are you planning on keeping the car?

All major car manufacturers design engines and transmissions around a 10 year / 150k mile 'life'. I would expect modifying a car to cause you any abnormal trouble during the time you are planning to keep it for. Espescially if you follow the advice above of using better oil, allowing the turbo to cool down, allowing the turbo to slow down after a run, stick rigidly to service intervals.

10 year / 150 mile 'life'.

150miles??? That's a lot of lucky boxes today if you ask me then! :D

The clutch will be the first thing to go.... ive just about hit 60k, needs a new clutch and probably a flywheel too :o

The talk of DM flywheel has me confused... Does it really bear a lot of brunt during gearchanges, etc as with my clutch, the oem flywheel has just been machined down... Does this maybe sacrifice some long term reliability, even if the clutch itself is as solid as a rock?

Just wondering. Not got may weak links in my system now. Would be interested to know if anyone knows the limits of the 6 speed box as well. ;)

ive heard the 6 speed gearbox has a limit of 350 newtons of torque, not lb ft

Whoops, miss one little 'k' and it all goes to ****...

350Nm? ooo-er. :D I'm not far off 50% more more than that.

edit: Are you the same Micky I might have spoke to on TDIclub? :D

the one and only!;)

25k miles remapped on mine (Jabba) and no problems to date. Infact the car feels more lively now than it did 10k ago, it just seems to get Quicker and QUICKER.

this is something thats been holdong me back too, just wondering what's the cost of a new clutch and as mentioned, the flywheel?

i accept things will wear quicker but need to weigh up the pros and cons for and against a remap
