Advice on servicing 1.2Tsi

I've had my Yeti from new in July 2010 and the service needs doing. Looking at the service book it's never had a major service so the spark plugs have never been changed. Skoda dealer changed the brake fluid too early in 2012. When I picked up on this they said they'd do it again in 2015 but for free, which they did. They also changed my service interval to yearly from QC1 so got them to change that back too. It was booked in for a major service but when they returned it they said it didn't need it so only did a minor. Have just spoken to them again today to establish why a full service wasn't done and she said they would have checked and if it didn't need doing they wouldn't do unnecessary work. I only do about 5k miles a year.

Can anyone tell me if this is ok and how long should spark plugs last?

I can't give any specific help about the 1.2Tsi, but the Škoda service guide is here   At about 25K miles, despite your low annual rate, some fresh oil here and there might be justified. 

Longlife Iridium spark plugs should be good for 40,000

They should indeed, and that is the Skoda / VW service Schedule / Guidelines.,

Unfortunately when a Main Dealership Technician might check the OEM plugs they find that some are gubbed well before that.

According to Skoda a major service should be carried out every 2 years or 20k miles but this has never happened. At last year's service my mileage was 25608 so I still find it difficult to understand why they only did a minor.

Agree with Brijo, regular oil and filter changes ( more so, on low annual mileage ) are my top priority using quality oil. My son had a 100,000 mile Polo 1.0 and a 150,000 mile Fabia 1.2 with no engine problems having had my oil change ministrations.

I'd be doing what they do in more car friendly Australia; annual /10,000mile (15,000km).

The oil change has been done each service but it's never had a fuel filter change.

Probably because Service Desk & Workshop Staff used to say Fitted For Life and no need to replace with 1.2 & 1.4 TSI then cars started needing Fuel Filters changed and Some Dealerships started changing them at 4 years at a Major Service.

As it's only done 31k miles I've booked it in for another minor service with Kwikfit on Monday. Sailed through it's MOT today with them and it's loads cheaper than Skoda. Hope I'm doing the right thing?

Is it a Oil & Filter change and a look around the car and a report, 

or are they doing anything else?

How much for this service and did you check what Oil they are putting in?

 

Has the brake fluid been changed at 3 years old?

It is 3 years and then each 2 years, but then the fluid can be checked for H20 content.

If I was using an independent workshop I'd be supplying all the fluids for my own peace of mind.

If not Skoda take it to a VAG specialist

 

Removing oil filter - it's easy to dump oil over the alternator

 

Oil filter has been revised somewhat and has a special valve arrangement (to stop drain back and to allow oil to run into the sump on removal) and if fitted incorrectly(esp overtightened) you can lunch your engine and/or timing chain (oil pressurised tensioner). Also always fit an OEM filter

 

Chain cam engines (if not all) need regular oil changes -  extended intervals not good for them

I do about 8000 mile/year with a 1.2 TSI yeti.  My plugs and leads failed at 38,000 - and it was more like push home rather than limp home mode as a result. Traumatic. I was on a variable service, and the plugs should have been replaced after 4 years or 40000, as I hadn't reached the 40000, they weren't replaced and I didn't get an advisory about the 4 year limit from the service interval warning. Skoda ended up giving me a £50 credit for the confusion about when to replace the plugs.  So my advice is fork out for new plugs and leads now and avoid the risk iof a bigger bill and inconvenience!

Not so much plug but a known plug lead problem, no 3 I believe.

Due to overheating, Skoda sorted it by fitting a better designed lead.

Anyone can do your Toyota/Honda/.......service, but IMO never a VAG.

The brake fluid was done last year and I did check it would be synthetic oil. It'll be £83.

 

Have you asked what oil they will be using. Does it comply with the relevant VW spec and viscosity. In my experience Kwik-Fit just have a couple of barrels of bulk bought oil.

 

The oil and OEM filter alone if correctly specified are around £45 to buy. I wouldn't be fitting anything else to a TSi

VAG are great until you're on your own, then you need a positive bank balance.

Rang Kwik Fit and of course they don't use OEM filters so thinking about cancelling with them after what Lee's commented. Awaiting call back from Skoda garage to see if they'll price match.
