Fusty smell from Air/con

Featured Replies

Hello, sorry to bring up this subject again. I have been looking through old threads.

Everytime I use the Auto or Econ blowers I receive a fusty damp smell. It's given me quite a sore throat. I'm wondering where the pollen filter is on a Mk II? Also if there are drain holes?

The pollen filter is situated in the passenger foot well.

If I recall, there's a couple of plastic screws holding the foam cover in place and once you have that out of the way the filter cover slides off.

Expect lots of crap to fall out.

You can also put a disinfectant spray through the system after you change the filter.

Do this. Whenever mine has developed a strange smell in the past, I've used the cleaner spray into the vents and it's worked a treat. It's only £3.99 and that's before the 25/30% off codes which seem to be almost daily with ECP lately.

If you are using a spray that goes into the air recirculation intake then take the filter out and refit the cover. Use the spray and then fit a new filter after.

I recently had a cheesy foot smell coming from mine!

I removed the pollen filter and bought one of those that you click down and leave in the car:

You then start the engine, put the aircon on full, fans on full and turn the recirc on and leave the can behind the passenger seat and click the top down and leave it.

Worked a treat and no more smell.

I got the one that you spray into the vents and it worked for about a day then the smell came back because the smell is actually coming from inside the system not the vents themselves.

Mould on the surface of the evaporator from the hot/cold/condensation cycle.

That's one! I couldn't remember what the bit inside the car was called. I was thinking condenser but that's in the engine bay isn't it?!

I try to now turn ECON on for the last few miles of the journey and blast the fans to dry it out.

Thank you for all your help. Is the evaporator easy to get to? Or should I just go with the spray and new filter idea?

The evap is inside the heater box.
