I'm reasonably sure that the sensor connector is just a push-fit into a slot in the metal bracket.  It's quite tight, especially as the bracket is presumably pretty rusty?  Should just be able to lever out the connector.  May be easiest to lever out any other connector pairs that are in the way of access, then you can get behind the lambda one with a big screwdriver or something? Go gently, go carefully.

As for spannering, an open ended 22mm of a reasonable length should get it out, but watch out for swinging into other stuff as it moves.  If you do it with warm engine it'll probably be easier.

cheers ,will give it a go.can the sensor be cleaned or not as the old haynes manual says to be careful not to knock it whilst removing

It would largely depend on what the fault code it. Also I've found the probe is normally very tight and requires a lambda probe socket to remove them.

I've heard of a blowtorch being used to burn off contaminating/blocking carbon but I wouldn't be confident of improving things unless it's really caked.

Is it the 6 valve engine (54hp) or 12-valve (64hp)?   The 6-valve uses a cheaper sensor.

As Tech1e says, what fault code do you have?

fault code is16514.this is from a memo scanner u281.description of fault reads,o2 sensor circuit malfunction (bank 1 sensor 1).also the car is the 64hp version

And no sign of any busted wires near the connector?

  • Author

none that i can see,I've cleared the code and the engine management light a couple of days ago and then yesterday whilst travelling along motorway about 70 mph noticed that it had reappeared

If it's a circuit malfunction the issue is electrical so cleaning won't do any good. Need to check the wiring to the probe connector. If that's ok then more than likely a new probe required.
