Fabia vRS Oil - Skoda's View

Featured Replies

Just had the 10k serviceand when I got home I noticed the garage (Skoda Franchised) had used Castrol Magnatec which is not 505 01 rated. I called Skoda and their view is that as long as the oil meets 5W 40 Specification it should be fine due to the vRS's 10k Service intervals. Anyone else heard this?

Ring up Skoda Customer Services and ask them whether there would be any warranty issues if you used Castrol Magnatec instead of 505.01 oil.

essentially it will be fine, as long as you don't go over 10K or drive like a hooligan 100% of the time. sounds like the dealer is trying to cut costs as the specific oil, the VW spec long life oil is quite a bit more expensive.

Magnetec is only a semi-syn oil too and not fuly syn, i would be asking questions of the dealer and get them to write you a letter stating that it won't cause issues if you make a claim in the future.

My dealer refuses to put in anything which isnt 501.01 spec. Not due to making more money either as I bought it myself...!

Surely the first consideration here is the engine type - ie PD with its special lubrication requirements - then the service interval? According to the Octavia Owner's Manual, PD-engined cars need VW 506 01 oil if on variable servicing and 505 01 oil if on fixed. The latter should also apply to the Fabia vRS.

Surely the simple fact is you paid for your car servicing within Skoda guidlines. This hasn't been done so you are entitled to have the work rectified or a full refund.

Exactly what I was thinking.

And whether is "ok" to use lesser oil is irrelevant. My car is my pride and joy - and hence wouldn't want anything but the best. ;)

Hi

If the handbook specifies 505.01 so that is what the servicing agent should have used. I have read up a fair bit on this and it appears that the PD oils have additional EP additives to cope with the load from the unit injectors. This is certainly borne out by the Quantum PD oil. You can smell the difference, the stuff stinks like an EP grease. Mine was recently filled with Quantum PD oil.

Out of curiosity, how much did they charge? Prestons at Writtle did mine while I waited for

Get it in writing - personally I'd insist on a free change back to the proper oil...

I called Skoda Customer Services and they said the Magantec would be fine as long as it was 5W 40 (or any oil to that Spec...). I then called the dealer to complain and the first statement was, we used Magnatec as it's cheaper than the PD oil. I took the car back and they re-filled it with the correct oil while I watched. The first service was

I wouldn't be using that dealer again!!

I'd rather pay a bit more for oil than pay alot more when the things go wrong.

I always supply my own oil when I drop it off for servicing. The dealer told me it was fine as long as it's 505.01 approved.

Or you could go to a specialist.........Star Performances rate for servicing my Octavia vRS was about half the dealer rate :) :)

£110 for putting an oil filter that cost them 80p and oil they buy in 200lt drums to the equiv of about £5 a gallon thats some mark up dealers have, makes me sick

enough with the ranting though

the magnatec is more than ok for your car 5/40 of any quality make will do like valvoline / fusch / duckhams ect

I wonder what else that particular dealer makes savings on, apart from the oil. When you are paying top price for a service the least you expect is that they fully comply with all the guidelines laid out by Skoda. If the dealer deviates from these practices and procedures then you may as well take your car to (VAT registered) Joe Bloggs down the road because he'll charge you less and will use the correct oil. Since owning a Skoda, I just can't get my head around how bad they really are, I quickly add that I've not yet visited every Skoda dealer in the country and have no intention of doing so. Perhaps I've just been very unlucky

I asked Mike at Jabba about the PD oil and whether it was worth it.

He showed me part of the injection pump system (i think) that was completley worn due to the wrong oil being used. Always use 505.01 - words direct from someone I would trust.

The only oil you can use in the PDs are 505.01, 506.01 and 507.00. 5W 40W has nothing to do with the rating for PD oil its the 505.01 bit thats important.

judging from this post looks like there will be lots of PD injector cam failures coming up in the near future.
