Skoda will not start. Crank only turns 180 degrees

Featured Replies

Hi there...

Before I send my skoda 2001 tdi to the crusher I thought I would give it one last try to fix it or at least find out if itis dead!

Just got it through the mot and drove it and a trip of 200 miles... No issues and running fine. Next morning tried to start it.. Nothing... Checked battery... All good then starter was smoking so changed this... Still the same... Had another look in the engine and noticed the aux belt was off not broken and the idler pully had broken off.. So tried to turn the main crank and it would not budge... It did turn back 180 degrees but on the turn of the key stopped like stuck in the same place each time... Is it a seized engine?

Does aux belt need to be on before it can turn over?

All help and advise warmly welcome!

Many thanks

Ross

If the engine was seized it wouldn't turn at all, surely. Although the engines clearly locking and thats burnt out the starter trying to turn it.

Have you taken the timing cover off and checked the belts intact? Maybe even just slack. Its not unknown for a belt to snap, or jump, out of the blue on start up (happened to me with my chain driven BMW), put the timing out and bend the valves into such a position the pistons can't complete their cycle and just lock up in the cylinder. Would be the first place I'd start.

Valves have touched pistons and by the sounds of it you've hammered it home.

To the scrap yard she goes.....

Has any coolant gone missing from the expansion tank? Just wondering if one cylinder might be half-full of coolant, due to a HG leak? That could stop it turning abruptly when the incompressible tries to be compressed, but I can't imagine how the aux belt de-railing fits with that.

Have a look at the fuse box on top of the battery for signs of burning & melting. There are 2 large cables there that are known to fail due to poor crimp connections, which can cause a few issues.
