I have a trolley jack with a metal round contact pad

If I jack the car up I will need to lift it on the sills

Doing this will dig in or damage the sill

Anyone got a good work round

Well, add a proper bit of hard rubber in between, or you could always, if you can get that top section off the trolley jack, replace it with a bespoke padded thing that has a cut out for the vertical section of body.

Yes, it is always a dilemma finding the right points and right equipment.  First things first I would NOT jack the car under the sills with the trolley jack metal cup. Certainly not without some proprietary adaptor or jack cup adaptor..

 

There are reasonable jacking points at the front around the front wishbone bush fixing points that a jack cup fits quite nicely into, At the rear also from memory there is a trailing arm fixing point which is domed and fits the trolley jack cup quite well.

 

The only further complexity I find is when trying to use axel stands as well when you've jacked the car up using the ideal point. It gets a bit tight for manoeuvring things around.  

 

If you do a google search there is quite a good guide on one of the golf forums edit(for a mk5 golf) - the set up is pretty similar. It is easier to work at the front end once the plastic tray is dropped out of the way.

I made a castellated shaped disc from 3mm steel which fit on top of the trolley jack cup.

I used a hole saw to cut a circle out of an old tyre tread and glued/screwed it to the plate which I drilled and tapped and used a countersunk screw.

I also glued a small magnet underneath to stop it from falling off, it holds on to the jack cup rivet.

It makes a good job of not damaging the underseal so I can jack in sensible locations where the body is strong.
