Driving School Mode?

Featured Replies

I thought it would be nice/interesting to enable Driving School Mode so I followed the instructions that I've seen on several websites (see below) but I can't get DSM to appear. I didn't get the VCDS:Re-code Invalid dialogue box.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

I have an Amundsen.

Controller  5F- Infotainment

Select 10- Adaptation

Select (11)- Vehicle function list CAN-Driving_school (it's about 40% down the channel list) - change to “Available”

Click Yes in the VCDS:Re-Code Invalid dialogue box

Select (171)- Vehicle menu operation-menu_ display_ driving_ school (it's about 75% down the channel list) - change to “activated”

Select (173)- Vehicle menu operation-menu _display _driving _school _over _threshold _high (it's about 75% down the channel list) - change to “activated”

Driving School Mode can be accessed as follows:

  • Press "CAR"
  • Press "view" on the bottom LHS of the screen
  • Select "driving data" option from the list
  • Repeatedly press either the "<" or ">" symbols until the "Driving school mode" screen appears.

Driving School Mode???

Is that Kangaroo starts, Stalls and sudden braking :-) or is there a serious need. Sorry

What extra things does this do or give then

So it does speed and is it indicators on the screen then along with the usual averages and range???

Interesting.

Pleased to know about this information on driving school modes. Last month, I took driving lessons from professional driving teachers.

They helped me in improving my driving skills.

Struggling to see the point?

Can the normal speed readout on the main dash not be seen from the passenger seat?

Surely the audible tick-tock and position of the indicator stalk is enough to determine if the indicators are on!?

You would hope that it would disable hill hold, as common as this and similar versions from other manufacturers are there is still a good chance that learner's first car won't have this.

Should perhaps be more up on the current test, but hill starts used to be part of test, presume it still is. Hardly fair on candidates if some have hill hold and some don't during test.

Mind you a whole new generation of drivers who can't do hill starts would be a good boost to new/newer car sales

.....and a corresponding increase in insurance claims in hilly areas?

Yes agreed.

Hoping everyone realising written tongue in cheek to appease the many who will not accept any criticism whatsoever of computer assist functions of any type.

If you had only ever driven a car with hill hold and didn't get the mechanics of it then it would be difficult for a new driver to even grasp the concept of what they were trying to do in a non assisted hill start.

Reality is with cars and everything in life the more the machine does to relieve the human of mental or physical effort the weaker and stupider the human becomes. We are sadly now so far along that road that there can be no going back.

I agree - the more automated systems are fed into cars the worse it will get (in the short term anyway) - I always wondered what would happen if an independent garage has a car in that has all of these new "safety" features, loans the customer a car without them, who then has an accident in the car, as they "thought the auto brake would stop it before it crashed" - if the garage has a signed disclaimer from the customer with the correct wording, then said customer is basically facing a claim. Similar to if you have collision assist/auto brake, it may save you from hitting the car in front, but what about the one behind that doesn't have that system fitted.

Lot's of worms in that can with me.....

If someone says 'I thought the auto-braking would stop the crash' then they'd be liable. Because the auto-braking is a driver aid, not a replacement for the driver paying attention.

It is the driver's responsibility to be alert and to respond to situations ahead of them, not for the car to prevent accidents.
