Is the Forge Intercooler really worth it?

Featured Replies

Getting a bit bored of saving up and doing bits on the car as and when so thinking of a small loan to finish it off, wheels, zaust etc

Was thinking of adding the Forge intercooler to the list too but am unsure if its really worth the 600 quidish it costs, its a lot of money for i suspect a very little increase in power.

I know they are also better at cooling the air so better for longevity but do remapped cars really have a problem anyway? Had mine mapped for 30k now without problems.

Really just after some comments from owners and they benefits they have found. And any problems with them

Thanks

Phill

In the summer I tested mine using vag-com. Temp was 30c outside. Took 20 seconds for the intake temps to go from 30c to 90c. This was both in std and remapped.

When its gets this high the ecu starts to back off the boost and fueling to try and bring the temps back down.

So really in the summer you will get an increase in power due to the fact the ecu is not reducing the power if your with me.

If you have the money then buy one.

Forgot to say. I dont own one but would love too.

As John says - if you want winter time style performance during the summer its worth it. Mine's not been remapped during any decent heat, so waiting for some 30 degC days to test it.

You only have to look at the standard intercooler, tiny and hidden behind the bumper, to realise its not going to be even close in cooling efficiency compared a bigger IC put in direct airflow.

I agree with the 'summer-time-only' thing for sure. Also, you can do the vented arch-tweak which does help a little.

I've got the FMIC but it's due for fitting at some point (late Jan/early Feb looks likely).

If your car isn't remapped I'd go for the arch-venting thing. Cheap, works pretty well, and no warranty implications.

If your car IS remapped the FMIC will mean you'll probably want to redo it to get the most out of it, if it hasnt been remapped (yet) it will allow you to use the extra power for more of the time.

Reasons I bought mine (no remap yet):

1. I didnt like the smoke during hot days - didnt happen much but still

2. Keeping the temps down means better fuel economy

3. Full use of engine power when booting it through the gears, unlike standard where it starts to wind down the fuelling a bit higher up 3rd/4th gears

4. Preparation for remap - my insurance doesnt allow remap but did allow me all the other gear at a small extra cost, so getting that all 'done'.

It IS a lot of money, and if you have other things to do on your car I'd probably do them first, but it's worthwhile IF you go for a remap/have one already.

OK thanks for that, I didnt realise it lowered the boost when hot.

Yeah I've done the wheel arch vent which does work ok, and its remapped (jabba)

Looks like it may benefit from the FMIC then. Was thinking of a tweak to the map anyway once the milltek sports cat and zaust go on in a few weeks, would make sence to wait for this then

And i promised myself I'd leave this car standard

You weak-willed man (from another even weaker willed one ;):D)

Definitely get the FMIC fitted before the rest. Even better would be to get all the materials in and get Jabba to fit it all and tweak the map all in one day. :)

As your car is Jabba remapped already, I'd be surprised you've not noticed the heatsoak kicking in during hotter weather. When was it done?

Jason's gone further than most to mod the PD100 into something PD1?? :D

Totally agree - get all the improvements (hardware wise) done first, then get Jabba to tweak the map to get the most from it.

Just thought it may be worth mentioning a new clutch at this point as well, as you're getting a loan to cover the expense it may make a lot of sense to fit the clutch & FMIC at the same time, run in the clutch, and then get the map tweaked.

Give the guys at Jabba a buzz though, I may be talking out of my rear end (as usual :P )

PD2?? ;):D Hardware before software is always the way to go.

lol poor isn't it, everytime something new pops up on here the credit card takes a hammering :D

Was done early summer last year about 30k miles ago, couldn't stop laughing on the way home!

Had thought of that as i had some slip a few weeks back, but seems to have gone away? wierd. Isn't the uprated clutch getting into very silly money though??

I was going down filter/full exhaust/fmic ect but my ecu needs replacing so

not getting fmic any more.

you will still get great gains without it fitted, i think if going down the k04 route them yes go for it but fit everything else first if not

ps anybody got an ecu for grabs for Vrs 02 pm me

Clutch may have settled, hard to say :) Costs about 600 quid as well IIRC - Jason's got an uprated clutch so he may remember how much the part(s) were

@Jason - oops oh yeah PD2xx :D not a bad state of tune for a PD100 :P :D :D

It's worth remembering that Lummox' old vRS had a hybrid turbo & no FMIC at the time, but he did suffer massive heatsoak during the warmer days of the year - still went like stink though :D

I was thinking of removing that spot light but thought it might look naff - will have a look down there when fitting the splitter this weekend

I've got the FMIC fitted and it makes alot of difference. The car is much more nippy, it will also rev alot higher than before. I'm hoping that later in the new year my current re-map will be tweaked!

I'm not 100% sure on "pikey mod 2" but if it helps any, I removed it for a rolling road day to attach the towing eye and it did help a wee bit. But I'm not sure if I'd have it off for every day driving.

Does it effect the air flow to the radiator?

It does reduce the airflow a little, but it is very unlikely to cause problems as the radiator has plenty of capacity to cope. Worst case scenario the electric fan will kick in a little more often :)

The FMIC was tested extensively by Forge with different 'depth' FMIC and apparently the depth used was a depth where the FMIC had excellent performance whilst still allowing good airflow through to the radiator.

If you are really worried about it, consider that the Seat equivalent has the FMIC in that location too, so it's not an unconventional placement or something like that :D

Now that that particular car has an FMIC, it goes even stinkier now :P :D

YES!

HTH :D

hehe - reading between the lines it sounds like you're very familiar, if not the owner of that particular car these days :D :D

Didnt it have an AMD custom map on it, just spotted turner TBC in your sig there?

The Seat one is also about 1 1/2 times bigger, plus it's thicker. with the same radiator.

And someone on this board has the one off xxl "big" intercooler... and is heard to be very very happy with it :D

well maybe a forge one is expensive check ebay for cheaper alternatives.

anyone thought about fitting another one so the car has two smaller ones?

lik a TT 225 dunno if theres room just an idea.

Hmm wonder who that was then :P :P

Annoyingly my number plate has ZXL rather than XXL, pure co-incidence it had that in, didn't get a choice or anything :D

Trying to find time that suits Stu & myself to get things fitted soon though

Thanks for all the comments

I didnt need much arm twisting afterall haha

dont forget you will have to make the pipe work fit, test it and maybe change it again not to forget make some room (I think the washer bottle is on the otherside).

Plus they are probably heavier (combined) than the forge one.
