Engine temperature?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Does anyone know what engine temperature should be on a 1.9 TDi?

I've logged a journey with Torque Pro and at bang on the middle of the gauge, the engine only got up to 76c and stayed around there...on a long downhill with no load, it dropped down to 70c

Can’t really say, as mine (1.4) , never moves from the middle. But be advised that diesel vehicles seldom run hot ,unless working. My best experience is on long "out in case nightshifts " we sat in out derv vans ,and we kept the heater on low. Any higher and the engine got cold. Not the first time ,i've had to take my Transit for a heat it up run in the middle of the night to warm up the engine.

Sounds about right for a diesel.

I only ask as the forums with the same cars with golfs etc. say the dial sits at 90c which seems a lot higher than mine

I've only ever driven petrols before now and they all sat at around 88c with the thermostat kicking in and out

According to this page (for a 2004), your thermostat shouldn't even start to open until the coolant temperature is above 87°C, so check whether when reading 70-odd C with your app, there is heat in hose number 8 indicating water flow through the radiator. If there is, then the thermostat is opening early/not closing fully, I think.
