17" Alloy and Sport Suspension options

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have an order in for a Monte Carlo in laser white. I've got pretty much every option apart from the sport suspension and 17" alloys.

Has anyone got any picture of a Fabia sitting on the 17" and with sport suspension?

How much of a difference does it actually make? How much does the sport suspension drop the car by?

Sounds like a recipe for looking "cool" and having back problems...which is not cool. Some years ago a good friend was told by a specialist doctor that he either got rid of his Porsche Turbo...proper air-cooled one...or put a down-payment on a wheelchair. His beloved Turbo went.

Not suggesting the Fabia will be that bad but you'll need great tolerance to love it long-term. There again, I'm an old duffer so can be safely ignored.

I think there's a fair difference between a Porsche and a Fabia on a sports suspension.

My current car has sports suspension and I travel 100 miles per day with it and have never had any issues - also with 17" alloys. My Fabia - also on order - has also been ordered with these options ticked. Given that my current car is of similar size, I'm not expecting the Fabia to be any less comfortable (flippin hope not anyway!)

There is a photo on this forum somewhere with the comparison of a normal vs sports suspension nose-to-nose. I've also read from other owners that it doesn't make a big difference in terms of comfort.

The 17" alloys make a huge difference to the cars appearance and should be standard on a car trying to look sporty etc. My new fabia Monte Carlo on order has 17" alloys but no sports suspension as I've currently got a MKII monte with both of the above and the ride is bone shattering. Looking forward to something a little softer but still keen to drive!

Oh great. That fills me with confidence.

Given the mixed comments on S/S and 17" alloys on this forum I think it's all down to personal experience. One person will find a ride harsh and the next will find it just on the right side of firm...

I want to lower my monte estate, I want to go lower than the skoda 'sports suspension' though, it hardly seems worth the money, it doesn't have to be stupidly low but the back still looks like its on stilts! I wish I had gone 17" wheels though, I might get some 17" rotor alloys, they're a bit over done in the VAG scene but they are a good looking wheel

I have the 17"s and sports suspension, the ride is not crashy or bumpy, if you can drive from the UK to half way through Germany and have no issues with your back you know there isn't a problem.

Just my 2p worth :)

It all depends on the car's all up weight, I'd reckon that if you are clinical obese, then the sports suspension and 17" alloys might work okay?

Sports suspension, maybe depends how it is achieved, Audi do an S-Line (with bigger wheels) and an S-Line with S-Line suspension - I believe that has to be driven in to believe how hard it is and what a cockup they made in the interests of providing a "sporting feeling" to a repmobile.  My S4 on teh other hand, is okay with its 19" wheels on or its 18" wheels on, I'd reckon a bit more work went into what was put on that car over the normal saving of a coil off the springs!

Quite a few new Polo 1.2TSI SEL people complaining about the hard ride, that is with standard 16" wheels, a bit of the same on here with Fabia with similar set up.

I am an old wrinkly light weight so I can even tolerate 17" on my daughter's old Ibiza SC, though others do give out the odd "oh" as we drive along, having proper seats helps that car a bit, but it is really light weight with its old 1.4 85PS engine.

However you dress it up a harsh ride is still a harsh ride.......... it's after you bought it that you convince yourself it's "firm" ;-)

Regards Bob

Phew. Knew there was someone who'd been okay with it.

Sports suspension means 15 mm lowered suspension and accordingly free hight underneath the car :)

Got it on miy fab, never noticed it should be harsh in any way.

17" wheels probably means more tire noise.

Any pics buddy?

The ride isn't anything like harsh with 17" wheels and SS on my monte estate. I had 6 x 90ltr bags of garden bark in it last week, the stance looked great, wish I had taken a photo.

Here's mine anyway.

Indeed, Fabia is verybdifferent to an air-cooled Porsche Turbo...the ride on that made the phrase 'upholstered rollerskate' a huge understatement, although probably wonderful on-track. I sincerely hope your new Fabia fills you with joy.

An Air-cooled Porsche before 1998 had some decent rubber between the wheels and the road and the car did not feel as crashy as a New Fabia on what Skoda consider to be Sports Suspension on All New Fabias with their cheap springs, dampers and bushes..

I may be wrong but I haven't seen anyone on here with the 17's and S/S on the mk3 Fabia moaning about the ride quality?? Strange.

Odd that but it is usually those with the Mk3's with 16s that want shot of those.

?

Are there many on here with Mk3 Monte Carlos hatches with 17's?

I don't know how many have that option but yes it seems the people with smaller wheels are complaining about the ride, this is probably scaring people off getting the 17"-S/S option, when it may be better. Spose driving style and experience will have a bearing on how you feel the car rides/handles.

Here is my Fabia with S/S and 17s.

Ride depends a lot of tyres. With Pirelli P Zero Nero was a very harsh. With Michelin Pilot Sport 3 and Conti SC3 was OK.

I have a Fabia with sports suspension and 16s and the ride is rather stiff. I can only imagine it'd be even stiffer with 17s...

I do still wish, however, the suspension were a couple of cm lower in the back. As someone above mentioned "it looks like its on stilts". Well, it's not that bad.. but seeing Peugeots, Kias, Hyundais and the likes all sitting nicely low on standard suspensions makes me a bit annoyed with Skoda!
