Refined the Fab!

Recommended Posts

Just to anyone who's thinking about adding some sound deadening.. do it!

I spent a few quid on Dynamatt for the Fab last week. I did all under the boot floor, under the rear seats and of course all 4 doors.

The difference its made to the road noise is brilliant. I'm no longer turning the radio up when coming out of a 30 and the whole car just seems to be much more refined. The doors even 'clunk' better when closing.. abit like the Golf advert perhaps?

Plus its made the stereo sound even better.

If anyones thinking about it.. just go for it! It makes such a difference. It's how the car should be!

I want to do this with my car. Not sure I'd trust myself to take off the door cards and stuff though. The boot would be easy enough to do but doors I'm not sure about. I called a car audio specialist today and asked if they could do it and they quoted £500 to do all the doors!

Its really not very difficult to get the door cards off at all mate! Theres 4 torx on the front doors and 3 on the back. Then just work your way round popping the clips, start at the bottom.

£500 is silly money. I paid £140 for 9 sheets of Dynamatt Extreme from my local car audio specialist, who told me what to do aswel. Ive still got 1 sheet left too.

No chance would i be paying £500 mate!

Do you have standard speakers in the front?

Yeah I have standard speakers in the front. I did consider upgrading the speakers in the front as well but I don't really have a problem with them and I'm thinking if I put the sound deadening stuff in the doors it will improve the sound of the speakers whilst cancelling out the road noise and some of the noise from my new exhaust lol. But £140 for that stuff sounds much more reasonable!

Did you take any pictures of the process at all?

The original speakers are rivetted in, so it will be much more difficult to get to the outter door skin with them in. You csn of course do the inner skin easily enough. Upgrade ones make a huge difference though, even if they arent expensive ones.

There is a hole which you can get through its just not as easy.

Yes the deadening does make it sound much better anyway. They bass seems to held better and the while sound seems more complete and kept in the car.

I havent got any pictures sorry, im the kind of person that gets stuck in and forgets to take any :D. Its easy enough though and id be happy to explain the best i can.

Dont do the drivers door first as theres more wires on it than anywhere else. So maybe easier to have a first go on the passenger side (:

Hey fabiamk2SE,

the best thing you could do for us (or people specially like me not being that familiar with a screwdriver - the biggest thing I've changed on the car was the NL Carbon intake - and very proud it :-)) are some nice "how-to" pictures. That would help us a lot!

Cheers

Stefan

Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look this weekend!

Id love to mate but im not taking it all apart again :D :D.

There is a guide on here somewhere already i think.

The inner door handle just prises off, then theres 2 torx screws behind there, one at the bottom of the door and then just pop the clips, starting at the bottom and working your way around.

Dynamatt is sticky back so just get as much in as you can. The bigger the pieces the better (:

This is already on my to-do list :)

How big was each sheet? I'll use that as a guide, as the 9 might be enough to do that extra boot area of the estate :)

Probably 3 foot by 18inches at a rough guess.

Yeah you'll probably use the extra one with the estate. If you're short, ive got one spare haha.

Think I saw Amazon have got a pack of 9 for just under £140, definitely going to order me some if it's fairly easy to do. Got some Vibe sound deadening stuff which I'm going to put on the boot floor too.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have just been reading this thread and think it is a fantastic idea, just wondering about 2 things.

would it be possible to put dynomatt in the roof?

also is there any risk of the dynomatt trapping moisture and causing rust?

You could i suppose, but you would have to remove the roof lining and also most of the road noise comes from below, seems as thats where the road is :D.

Never heard of any issues and the panels are all fully painted anyway. It stocks to the metal so any condensation should be on the aluminium of the dynamatt.. In theory?

It's usually door and window seals for actual wind noise, if that's what you're picking up on. How well these seals, if there are any gaps etc.

Usually you'll use Dynamat or equivalent to reduce road noise, then the wind noise can then become a bit more noticeable :)

Oh, I think that you have not looked closely enough, it gets stuck to the outer panels/skins.

Edit:- anyone found the need to add a sound deadening or foam to A, B or C pillars - just really a random question as I've alway thought that quite a bit of (wet) road noise was coming up from the B pillars?

when you installed the dynomatt in the doors did it go in front or behind of where the windows come down?

Both mate.

If you can get as much in the outter panel as you can.. Then do the inner skin too. It all makew the difference

Did you have many breakages with the door card clips, will be removing mine so just wondered if its worth getting a few spares

I didnt no. Some of them stayed in the door but were easy enough to pop out n change over before putting it back on.

Getting spare clips isnt a bad idea though! Always good to have.

I've added some carpet underlay which I had spare (good quality thick stuff) to under the boot carpet and rear seat bench. It has made a sizeable difference to cutting down on noise from the rear.
