Anyone have any information about 230 engine?

Featured Replies

I've been scouring the internet looking for some (half idiot) guides to the Ocativia VRS 230 engine, turbo and ediff.

A fella I work with thinks that the turbo might have two separate fans, one for lower down in the rev range.  Also the bits I have been able to find suggest the engine is intercooled, and one bit even suggests that it is super charged.  Can any one point me in the direction of a Haynes Manual Type thing for my car?

I would have thought that the Engine is the same as a 220 with a mild map for the extra 10 BHP.  Can't see Skoda putting different parts etc etc if theres a face lift coming out next year.

Think it also has a bit more torque

The way it drive does suggest to me it has a variable vane turbo as after the first kick of torque at 2500rpm it gives a second belt at 4500 right through the range. Also claims of a remap from 230 to 315-330 reinforces this belief too. It's an IHI turbo and many manufacturers these days use vario turbos to increase peak power and flexibility throughout the rev range.

All turbo cars have intercoolers to cool down the compressed air from the turbo.

The diesel vRS and therefore probably other diesels in the range use charge coolers now.

Sorry - meant petrol; in relation to the 230 petrol :)

Info on this seems to be inconsistent. I've seen articles which state that it's mapped differently, but at least one that says it's the next gen engine, which fits with what the guy at the dealer told me when I picked mine up this week. I'd quite like to know what the truth is.

It's most definitely not a bi-turbo.

So, Thanks for all your replies guys.  There still seems to be a lack of certainty about what Skoda (VW) have actually put in the 230!

The turbo used on all VRS 220/230's is an IHI IS20. It is an relatively small and simple design, suited to fast spooling and low-end torque/power. At the higher-end it can choke a bit due to it;'s small size. Higher power Golf-R's and Cupra R's get the larger (but equally simple) IS38. The IS38 is less responsive but can sustain far higher boost further up it's rev-range.

The ICE's within VRS 220/230 and Golf GTI Mk7's are identical. The 10bhp difference between models is achieved by softaware/mapping.
