Honest opinion guys...........Is the New Octavia worth the money

Having driven the £20k Golf which, its basically the same car, I imagine tthe VRs is a great car for the money.

Not driven one yet though.

depends what you want:

cheapest for best handling: Focus ST-1

poshest: Golf

fastest: VXR Astra

most pracitcal: Octavia vRS Mk2

best looking: personal pref but i would rank Astra then focus then Leon then octy then golf.

best looking modified: to early to tell but suspect Octy / Leon. The Focus / Astra dont need any appearance changes bar wheels on the Focus.

Not having driven the Golf, but having driven the Octy, if they are indeed as similar in terms of driving, then the Octy is good value. It felt like a 17k car. The extras bump it up, but in fairness, not as much as they bump the golf up. Theres not much in it between similar specced Octy and Focus either, so, it's no performance bargain, but instead, imo, reasonably placed in the market.

I appreciate that was with a £1k discount. I don't see the new vRS as being much better or more loaded than my car...accept for the extra power....to justify the extra £2k. Seems they've priced it against the golf not the old model....and not other cars in the market. I mean come on...a Focus ST is cheaper!!! When i got my vRS I felt like I was being smart getting such a good car for such a good price....The new model is getting close to being priced the same as all its competitors...which takes that edge away....for me anyway. Guess its enevitable as it gains popularity. I've read many times on here where guys have wanted to keep the Skoda a secret from the rest of the driving world so it doesn't ruin its appeal...think that time is pretty much here.

I agree. The new Octavia RS seems to be priced against the Golf Gti, but as a prospective buyer, and I hate to say it, the Golf should have stronger residual value when it comes time to sell it on.

The mark 1's "ace" was the price... when I drove it, I wanted it - when I saw the price, I had to have it! I don't get the same urge with the new model. I love the Golf and know that I will love the new Octavia too, but if I was buying new now, I would probably go the whole hog and get the DSG Golf GTi. Having said that, I will not be changing for at least another year or two, so the new RS may well be a great used bargain by then.

The Golf will absolutely hold its value more...which I hate to say as well....but its a fact even though arguable the Skoda is better...but at the very least its equal. NOW...if they stuck some toys on the vRS like DSG for the price...bingo....we'd be happy we were getting something special again

The new vRS's real price is £18k when compared with the GTi (need to add dual aircon+elec rear windows to be comparable). I personnally think for an extra 2k, the GTi is a nicer car and will probably make the extra two grand on resale value.

Yes but remember that car wasnt 14.5k when it was launched.

And it was not as well built - or used the same level of materials.

Also the additional safety & security kit, the better performance,better economy and all the other things that come along with this new model.

Don't forget as well as being basically a golf with a different body - it's also an AUDI with a different body -- the A3 uses the same floorplan,Engine & Gearbox

No thats the 2.0TFSi S-Line A4 -- although I suspect it will soon be -- may even be the engine they use for the S3 thats coming at the end of the year -- they are talking of a 250bhp varient.

But they are also talking of a twin-charger 3.2v6 -- Turbo & Supercharged

Just tested the car this afternoon, liked the power, seats and position, queit, excellent gearbox good brakes. Happily pulled in sixth from 35mph and on motorway picked up nicely uphill in 6 from 65 (didn't feel as rapid as fabia at this point but reached higher speeds quiker ). Disliked the cheap feeling hard plastics of the radio, centre facia and climate controls, thought rear spoiler hampered rear visibility. HID felt claustrophobic in driving seat, but liked passenger seat. Overall think it is overpriced and spoilt by dash facia controls. Not sure what car thinks it is,too big to be a hot hatch, too slow to warrent group 17 insurance? probably is as cheap and as comfertable as youy can get for a 4/5 seat family car capable of these speeds, but if you want a family car why suffer the insurance? If you want an hot hatch get a Fabia, AMD it and save cash all round. I did enjoy the car tho and would probably pay upto £16/16.5 for dealer spec.
