Skoda - Why did you buy one?

Featured Replies

I bought my scout to replace a BMW. Looked at another BMW and a Jaguar XE but kept coming back to the scout. The others couldn't match it for spec, space and 4wd for the price and I've not been disappointed. It does everything that I need from a car and more and I can't see me going back. I love the practical, honest and unpretentiousness of it.

  • I bought mine because it was one of the few cars that would give me space, petrol engine, 4x4 and automatic transmission without costing a fortune.

It was pure maths that brought me to Skoda. Had a fabulous Volvo V70 2.5T which was feeling its age, so needed roomy, reliable wheels...but was about to start a business and didn't want a big financial commitment. Octy hatch ticked the boxes, and like most people who've come to Skoda from another brand I was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

My only regret is choosing an SE over an Elegance. Tried an Elegance, family thought the ride in the back was pretty poor, so went for an SE with taller profile tyres and spent the money gained on a DSG box. On second year of PCP and now wish I'd gone for the Elegance anyway as the SE's ride isn't that much better and I miss steering wheel stereo controls and cruise control.

Still, an SE 1.4 TSi DSG hatch is a decent set of wheels and does everything a family car should do surprisingly well - great space, decent performance, whopping boot, plain but decent quality interior.

Will I replace it with another Octy? No (and the facelift previews I've seen don't look good). Next time round I'll look at a Superb or a Kodiaq if I stay with Skoda, but my choice will be determined by comfort (the Octy's torsion beam back axle just isn't up to the job) and tech - I'll want to see radar cruise control and automatic braking in traffic etc. Decent economy etc goes without saying.
