What to do with Ford Ka damaged by hit and run

Featured Replies

SWMBO's car was smashed up whilst parked in town a little while ago. Front right is caved in. More than a "parking kiss" : the crash bar is partly bent back, plastic wheel arch now rubs against tyre, etc. I was able to drive it home at 5mph and it's been sitting on the drive for the last few weeks. CCTV camera footage was apparently unavailable and Police investigation on the hit and run has led to nothing, so we can't claim against a probably drunk driver whacking it and then carrying on.

We've bought a replacement car, but need to decide how to dispose of the Ka.

It's an old one, on an X plate. Has a few knocks (apart from this major one). It would need an MoT and obviously repairing the crash damage. Rear left wing has suffered another scrote's scrape, but still OK for MoT.

I feel like it's one of those things where it's certainly not worth going through insurance, the car's hardly worth anything, but someone could spend £50 at a breaker's yard, a few hours effort, and it would be back on the road as a cheap runabout.

I can't be bothered to try and fix it myself, but don't want to just "throw it away".

So what do you recommend is the best course of action?

Jason, fancy another project? :D

Bung it on the likes of gumtree etc, maybe even local free ads - autograss forums as well, they like the early Ka as it is light

It's just a car after all. Will scrappy come and collect it from you? Not sure you'd get much though.

At present most scrappers round here are charging people to take them away - scrap market has fallen flat again since China has slowed

Is it the one with the bolt on wing or the welded on one?

If bolt on, then up the scrappy, get the bits you need and do it.

If not then as stated, stick it on autotrader as a Pay £10 to fix my cost of advertising it.

That or the KA forums as spares/repairs.

Somebody will want bits from it or as you say to repair it as a runner.

eBay Motors, spares or repairs.

£0.99 starting bid, no reserve.

Cash on collection.

Ovalbangerchat, it'll be gone by the end of the day :D

The top scrap offer I had for my wife's MOT'd 02 Ka was £54, lowest was £6, sold it on eBay for £135, less £10 to list, less £20 minimum final fee, so £105, better than scrapping it, plus the bloke came round, handed over cash and drove it away

Start it on eBay at a tenner with plenty of photos. Someone will want it.

Shouldn't need an MOT unless it's expired?

I would stick it on an eBay auction too - probably get more than a scrap yard would offer you.

If you're feeling generous I think there are charities that collect scrap cars free of charge.
