Yeti TD170 Battery Change

Featured Replies

Thank you. That didn't come up in the search that I did.

The Varta 027/D15 went in fine (now £77 from Battery 2U) and no issues with electric windows or dashboards like Blackpool illuminations. Surprisingly easy to remove the old battery too.

Just to add a bit of info as it doesn't seem to be anywhere else -

The battery size for the 1.8TSi is 013.  At 243/245 mm long it's shorter than everything else mentioned on here.  My old one was original I'm sure - had the Skoda type number on it - and was an Yuasa 013.  New one is also a Yuasa 013.  (Bosch without having to pay for the brand?)  Original 60Ah, new 62Ah.

And a cunningly useful tip:  if you buy your new battery and leave it in the boot while you remove your old one you won't be able to open the boot to get at your new one.  And you'll end up having to re-connect the old one just to do so.  Deep wisdom that comes from experience.

Don't rely on web sites to find out what the correct battery is.  Batteries can vary depending on model year, spec, and the month the car was built.  I have a 2013 Yeti 4x4 2.0 TDi.  All the web sites told me the wrong battery (type 96) based on my registration, and eBay told me the correct one would not fit!  The only sure way is to make a note of the product code on your existing battery, then look it up on Google.  Mine needed a UK type 027. Also, measure your existing battery and make sure your new one is the same size (give or take a few mm).  I bought an Exide Premium with 5 year warranty from a large eBay retailer for £51 delivered. Eurocarparts wanted £130 for the same one, even with their current offer it was still over £80 with them, but at least they knew the correct battery.

Very easy to fit:

  1. Remove the -ve terminal clamp first with a 10mm socket or spanner. You might need to prize apart the clamp with a screwdriver.
  2. Remove the +ve terminal clamp.
  3. Undo the retaining clamp at the bottom of the battery (and don't drop the bracket or clamp in the engine bay).
  4. Remove old battery.
  5. Clean out the crud from the bottom of the tray.
  6. Clean inside the terminal clamps with rolled up emery paper.
  7. Refit +ve terminal clamp. Don't over-tighten.
  8. Refit -ve terminal clamp.
  9. A few warning lights will remain on for a minite or two when you first switch on - that's normal.

I'd my battery changed at Halfords a few weeks back after going out to a dead one... Girl who swapped it over didn't do anything out the ordinary and the only thing I had was my Power Steering & Traction Control Lights still n ... They'd been on since the breakdown guy jump started it ... This time both lights went out after a few minutes after starting the car and driving it... I'd not even driven perhaps 200 yards ...
