Superb weights

Featured Replies

Test centre surprised at weight (off VIN) of the 1.6td greenline hatch over 2tonne kerbside?

Sounds like their database is screwed up. 2 t is somewhere around the DGVW for that model.

That is not the Kerb / Unleaded weight,  but must be the  Maximum Gross / Revenue weight.

it affects their brake test results so it would be good to know....

1.6 manual would come between 1.55 and 1.65 metric tons.

2 metric tons is close to the 2.1 ton max operating weight.

The weights for your model year will be in the table for your engine, Technical data section, in the owners manual. Show them that if they insist on a 2 ton kerb weight.

In the real world of testing brakes,

Lets hope that Taxi's brakes are good & efficient with a driver a 4 passengers and luggage and not just at stopping at Unladen Weight

with a 60 kg driver and not a full tank of fuel as sits at the kerb before any fares get in.

Not just taxis though eh?

No ones with family and friends and maybe towing trailers or caravans.

There is a plate on the car with the weights.

Vehicle data sticker
The vehicle data sticker is located on the base of the luggage compartment and is also fixed into the service schedule. The vehicle data sticker contains the following data:
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Vehicle type
- Gearbox code/paint number/interior equipment/engine output/engine code
- Partial vehicle description
- Operating weight (in kg)
- Fuel consumption (in ltr./100 km) - intra-urban/extra-urban/combined
- CO2 emission levels - combined (in g/km)

Type plate
The nameplate is located at the bottom of the B-pillar on the driver's side. The type plate lists the following weights:
- Maximum permissible gross weight
- Maximum permissible towed weight (towing vehicle and trailer)
- Maximum permissible front axle load
- Maximum permissible rear axle load

I assume that's from the 2015? In which case, keep reading the manual I linked ;)

There is a section about Operating weight and payload on the following page (237).

Operating weight
This value represents the minimum operating weight without additional weight-increasing equipment such as air conditioning system, spare wheel, or trailer hitch The specified operating weight is for orientation purposes only. The operating weight also contains the weight of the driver (75 kg), the weight of the operating fluids, the tool kit, and a fuel tank filled to 90 % capacity.

Operating weight of the vehicle » page 240, Vehicle-specific information depending on engine type.

Unfortunately the online manual I have doesn't cover the greenline with a 77KW engine so I would suggest you refer to the copy that came with your car.

Practical caravan guide

2ltr

The Škoda Superb Estate is a big car, measuring 4.83 metres from bumper to bumper. Despite its size, Škoda’s quoted kerbweight is surprisingly low. The car weighs just 1554kg, and that’s including 75kg for the driver not included in Škoda’s published kerbweight. That gives an 85% match figure of 1321kg. The legal towing limit is 1800kg, the maximum noseweight is 80kg.

A test centre will refer only to....chassis plate (not got one)......sticker (no kerbside weight showing) or their own mighty DVLA link, which is what they have to do.

My manual has the Greenline 1.6d Estate in it - operating weights for both cars are given as:

1534 - 1692 for 1.6d,

1541 - 1699 for Greenline 1.6d

The range is to cover the weight of possible optional equipment that could be installed.

i would have expected the Greenline to have a lower operating weight - the owners manual may be off? Still, its only a matter of 8-9 kg.

The chassis plate is the one on the B pillar.

The 4 weights on it are (in order from top to bottom): DGVW, maximum train weight, maximum front axle load, maximum rear axle load.

Kerb weight is one of those things that depends on a lot of factors. Different countries have different specs for it too. The technical section in the owner's manual quotes the nominal kerb weight for a car with a 75 kg driver plus some amount of fuel. If you're missing the manual, you can get it in the Skoda Service app or download it from the Skoda website.

If it comes to it, you could probably get a letter from a Skoda dealer specifying what the kerb weight is if the DVLA don't accept what's in the manual.

ill take it to a public weighbridge first with full tank/spare wheel and me.....

its worrying that something so simple is so hard to locate

There is an owners manual dated 05/2012 here: https://mediaportal.skoda-auto.com/resource/documentation/manuals/en/Superb/05-2012/Manual/B6_Superb_OwnersManual.pdf

It lists the curb weight as 1524 kg for the 1.6 hatch greenline on page 232.

Are you sure there isn't a similar section in the your manual?

Ive got that page but as I said, a test centre can only go by the DVLA specs or a chassis plate....

If the test centre believes the information is obviously incorrect then this page suggests it can be corrected:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-testing-service-enter-vehicle-specific-information-vsi

I would argue that having the nominal vehicle weight close to above the maximum gross weight is obviously incorrect. It says they should refer to manufacturer information to correct this, the owners manual is exactly that. The maximum gross weight should match between the owners manual and chassis plate which will help your argument.

Otherwise, find a tester with a brake tester with incorporated weighting facility :)

They go by the sticker on the drivers door pillar.

That is their job 5-6 days a week, trained and qualified technicians / MOT Examiners, odd they are having issues.

The one that has no kerbside weight on it?/

The one that has no kerbside weight on it?/

From what I've read - the kerb/curb weight isnt given on any of the cars plates and/or stickers.

It always the range given in the owners manual.

Searching for it elsewhere will be pointless. The real question is what is going on with the figure the test centre is using?
