Skoda Octavia II - Weird climate control behavior

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone!

I've been facing a strange behavior with the automatic climatronic.  It works well when you switch ON and the interiors do get cool.  However, as you drive the car continuously for about an hour or more, the cooling seems to drop and there's no air flow from the front vents.  The blowers are functioning fine (as I can hear the blower sound).

This condition remains so until I roll down the windows for a few minutes and then roll them up completely, the air flow from the front vents resume and the cooling is also optimal.

However, after driving continuously for about another hour or so, the above situation repeats.

I did try a VCDS scan but no errors seen.

Could there be any problem?

regards,

Nitin

If you have an Octavia II then you've posted in the wrong forum...

Is it not the case the Climate Control had reached the desired temperature and it's only pushing out enough air to maintain that temperature.

By opening the window you are increasing or decreasing the internal temperature and the CC has its work cut out to get back to the required temperature, hence the air vents throwing out more air.

I'll second that :-)

In "Auto" when the climate system nears the desired temperature it will change which vents the air flows through, opting for window & floor vents so that you dont have air blowing directly in your face. (front vent flow is still open the flow is reduced)

It does the same when you start the car in hot conditions, the dash vents do not blow any air for a few seconds.

The climate system pushes the really hot air (from when the car was stationary) out of the floor & window vents & it activâtes the dash vents once the cooler air starts to come through.

If you set your system to "manual" - fixed temperature, front vents only the air flow should be constant.

If this is the case I would say the climate system in auto works as intended.

You can also try changing the profile of the air conditioning.

I think by default it is set to "light" but if you set normal or strong I would assume it will blow stronger through the front vents during normal operation.

As others, this sounds like Climatronic working "as designed" to me.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replies.  A couple of points to note:

1. I am not using the climatronic in the "Auto" mode but set the temperature using the rotary knobs and adjust the blower speeds to my desire.  The vents are selected to the front and in recirculation mode.

2. The temperature may be set to maximum cooling but I would be feeling hot and the blowers may not be blowing from the front.

Once I open the windows for a few minutes, the blowers blow from the front with cold air or as per the set temperature.

@ Gabbo: How do I change the air conditioning profile in an Octavia II?

Please suggest.

regards,

Nitin

I wouldn't drive for long periods worth it set to Recirc, that's really only meant to be used for short periods.

In the late 90's a I was a passenger in a Renault Megane travelling from South England to Scotland. After a few hours we felt terrible; light headed and nauseous. We worked it out the driver had inadvertently hit the Recirc button when changing gear. The button was poorly positioned on a low panel directly opposite 3rd gear.

You can forget driving/travelling in a car in India without the recirculation mode ON, owing to huge pollution.

Would anyone be able to suggest what could be right/wrong?

From what you've described, it's probably a built in feature to stop the exact scenario that Fin69 has just described.

Opening a window brings much needed fresh air into the cabin if it's been on recirculation mode for a long time.

As stated my others, it would appear your CC is operating as it should. The amount of air being pushed out will decrease once it has reached the chosen temperature, even if you've chosen a higher speed setting. Otherwise if it continued to blow at speed 5 or 6 and you've set the temperature to 18°c, it will cool it to a lower temperature.

If you want the car to blow at a cold temperature at a high fan speed, set the temperature dial all the way round til the blue segment is lit, and then turn the fan speed to the fastest setting.

And I have driven in India;Mumbai and Goa !

The temperature is set at the lowest level and the blower set to one level below maximum.  The mentioned phenomenon exists even at such a setting.  I would start feeling quite warm, though the cooling is set to maximum and the blowers are set to high.  Quite interesting.
