00588 airbag error

Featured Replies

Hello.

Recently I got an error regarding the airbag. I had it tested today and found out the error is 00588 - Upper limit exceeded.

I searched about it and most likely it's the wiring in the clockspring or behind or somewhere in between.

I took out the airbag to measure some voltages in the wheel and I have a question. The upper 2 pins are the airbag. The lower left pin is ground. I didn't get ANY voltage between ground and either pins nor between the two upper pins.

Should the airbag receive tension in stand by mode or when it has to deploy, it will receive it?

I'll try to find a T8 torx to take down the whole wheel in order to see what's up.

Thanks for the help.

Just out of interest are you qualified to carry out diagnosis on an airbag system?

Do you know how a multimeter works and potential difference?

If either of the questions above are answered no then stop what you are doing.

Oh and it is more than likely a slip ring issue.

I do not have qualifications to carry out any diagnosis on the car, but that doesn't mean I'll shoo away from it. I enjoy taking the car apart.

I know how to use a wide variety of meters, how they work and what the values mean.

I'll check the clockspring when I'll get ahold of that torx.

Thanks for the help.

That's fine except that here, you're taking apart a system with several explosive devices in it!

I do everything with the battery disconnected. After I removed the whole airbag i connected the battery a8gain to test the voltage.

After I reconnect it back I start the car from the passenger seat just in case. If it pops it pops, will get a new one.

Safety first always.

An airbag deploys as a result of voltage...

A multi meter uses a voltage when checking resistances...

And there is one on the passenger side also...

Please stop what you're doing.

Whats the worst that could happen......... :@

Pleas film it so that another 1 can go on youtube

Ok nevermind.

What part of the airbag is disconnected from the wheel and on the passenger seat when checking the pins you don't understand? How can airbag deploy if it's not connected to anything?

I'll assume from simannjo's post that those 2 pins should have tension only when the airbag deploys.

Thank you for all the help.

The Superb has several airbags that are all connected to the same system. Any spurious voltages applied to that system could cause a detonation. So you applying a multimeter to the pins on the car could send a voltage back to another airbag and set that off.

I had an airbag fault code, it turned out to be a worn connection in the driver's door wiring loom. Fixed with a replacement loom.

Cheers
