Mk5 Golf GTi to get 237BHP 2.0FSi Turbo

Featured Replies

As stated in this months CAR Magazine the Golf GTi is getting the upgrade to 237BHP.

As i read it the current Golf GTi power level will be available but you'll be able to pay extra to have the higher output.

Lets hope that Skoda will do the same for the Octavia vRS.

Or that 240ish will be available through other means. ;)

and then the point of the R32 will be?

4wd and torque???

More than likely it will get the higher output (same as A4 S-line) due to the vRS id say, keeps them ahead a touch.

Losers...VW that is...yeah biggy, 4wd and torque, but you gotta remember the weight of the R32 in comparison to the GTI, and if they're gonna give the thing another 40bhp, most surely the torque figure will go up as well, and it will kill the R32, which means there really won't be any point to having the R32. A bit of a foolish move I think.

Main reason for buying an R32 over a GTi - The sound!!

Worth every penny IMO, my mates previous shape R32 sounds the absolute nuts!!

I recently went into a VW dealer and asked about the R32 - They're currently taking orders for delivery in 2007

So the Golf will end up with the same problems as the Astra VXR and become rubbish then?

Don't believe everything you read. The Astra vXR handles fantistcally IMHO.

Depends on the drivetrain too. Torque steer is caused by the length of the drive shafts, the bigger the difference in length between the two, the worse the torque steer.

If the Golf's shafts are the same length it wont be a problem.

I was thinking about the telly test drives by proper 'drivers' (not saying you aren't:D ). I'd like a VX220 though

Funny how something with 100 bhp through the front wheels used to be a lot!

This is one time I reckon BMW win the argument

At the limit it's bound to be twitchy (or kill you even) but for the most part I found it a really good, predictable drive.

If you want to go Top Gear they all slagged it for being undrivable, then it lapped 2 seconds quicker than the Golf. Obviously the 'proper' driver disagreed with the journalists.

at what point does the power to the front wheels become excessive and actually not make any difference to real performance?

When all it does is spin the wheels

IMO, I think anything over 201.7 bhp is too much for a front wheel drive car

When all it does is spin the wheels

And that can be cured with bigger, stickier tyres ;)

But they're not much good in the pouring rain ;)

The reason I ask is that when I drove a 250bhp Saab the right foot pedal seemed to be a wheelspin regulator.... :)

Even my car is now too torquey for first gear.

Given that traction out of bends appears to be the limiting factor, adding a lot more power to the front wheels maybe doesn't give much of an advantage.

Having said this, my car is better than it was as standard  -not sure if any more would be worth it though.... although maybe carrying the high torque further towards the top of the rev-range might be good..... Yep, more grunt is good!

Isn't that why they fit all these cars with ESP? ;)

I don't think ASR on mine or ESR on Jane's does much then.

*Must check if we are both running slicks:)

Here we go again.......

Back on topic, The current GTi has no torque steer issues what so ever

Back on topic then,we are talking about a golf gti potentiall with 237 bhp,not the current one with 197 or whatever;)

Well why buy a Golf Gti and pay the extra for 40bhp, when the chances are that the Leon Cupra R will put out from the off and still cost less.

......because the Leon will cost more in depreciation.
