What's the most important question when you're buying your next car?

Featured Replies

In hindsight- major (hidden) service costs. My Fabia only needs an oil change annually, but a circa £400 cambelt every four years, irrespective of how few miles I do .

1) Body type / practically.

2) Economy / performance

3) Running costs / insurance / service intervals etc

4)It's not French

Errrrm

Its usually whats up with it as i have a habit of buying cars that are broken,

Then how am i going to get it home

Agree with first three but I actually prefer French, Italian  etc now over VAG stuff, or BMW or Merc. The nation that builds the aircraft we often use and builds the nuclear powerr statino that keeps our lights on can be trusted to build a few simple cars.   Though I do like the Veyron....

Interesting that safety rating or Co2 & NoX have not been high priorities on anyone's list.

On both Safey rating, say EuroNCAP, the more I have read on it the less I think it is a reliable rating system.   A car can get the 4 or 5 stars, have a poor passenger safety rating but has seat belt warning systems and also has virtually no protection against a rear end collision as that this not rated even though it is one of the way passenger are killed.

CO2 as become much less important over the last few years and NOX and PMs have become more the focus.  CO2 has come done, if we believe the figures, cylinder de-activation tech apart apparently, and we were taxing it heavily for those cars over 200 gm/km for instance although this is to cease from next year under the road tax system where you won't get clobbered as long as the car cost less than £40K or so.  5.7 litre Mustang could be a winner if the do not raise the prices so much due to the GB currency issues.

I like the idea of low NOX and low PMs and hopefully we will have a proper real world measuring system in the next few months that we know where we are with these emissions as well as CO2 when driving along the street rather than in a lab.

Yes, the Dacia Logan MCV didn't come out well in the EuroNCAP ratings. Do you feel safe when driving it ?

I do actually.  (But then I used to drive original Minis, Spitfires and lots of two stroke motorbikes that were tuned within in a inch of seizing and sometimes did).

The Sandero (4 star tested in 2013) and the Logan (test one year later and if anything a bigger car and even safer for a rear end collision) and it only got 3 stars but they are both made from the Mark 3 Clio which was five star in 2005/6 when it was European car of the year and now the car not only has ABS but ESP as well now.

I have a Mark 4 Clio now as well and it does fell a bit more solid/planted but in reality in one hit a bridge or ran in to a truck there would be mainly more variables which would be more important than absolute chassis structure I feel,  I am making sure all my tires have wet whether grip of the A rating ie are Avon ZV7s (I have uprated the Logan to 16 inch 205/16 from the Sandero Stepway) and using UniRoyal etc also on other cars for A rated options and combined with driving sensibly, alert etc.

Yes I like the big old Jag etc but road incidence like Princess Diana's death in the S type Merc show there are still lots of factors to consider.  Starting to warm again to Volvos, Zoe was safest Supermini etc......
