SEAT Ateca

Featured Replies

Had a nose round an Ateca on Saturday whilst in a SEAT dealer - very nice, excellent space in the back, and space overall.

Took one round the block very quickly whilst the OH was test driving an Ibiza - was very smooth.

Once you add in the Skoda details, I think this will be a very good car.

Had a go in one myself recently.
The one thing that knocked me back about one was the looks of the Dash.

It just looked bland and cheap.

The other frustration is that if you want a DSG you have to buy a diesel. The big attraction of the Kodiaq is that there looks like being a 1.4 tsi petrol with a six speed DSG, as Skoda already offer with the Superb. For me, that's big plus point. I don't do huge miles and I reckon that the best days of the diesel engine are behind us when petrol ones can  do almost as well on mpg and are just so much quieter.

Do you feel the 1.4 would be decent enough to pull the Kodiaq around ?

I am a bit dubious.

There have been lots of good reviews of this engine, including some reviews on the Superb forum here. It is fitted to loads of models across the VAG range and is modern and efficient. We have a 1.2tsi engine in our Fabia and it flies. I know that's a smaller car but the principle is the same - smaller, souped up petrol engines are being fitted in big cars - e.g. a 1 litre engine in a Ford Mondoe, a 1 litre engine in an Octavia, both capable of producing over 100 bhp. I'd be quietly confident that the 1.4tsi engine would be fine in a Kodiaq, especially as the weight of new cars keeps coming down.

Guarantee it won't come with those tyres fitted!

We just drove the 4wd one. Really nice and interior etc better than our vRS.

Surprisingly nice drive

Thomas is the boy! IMO.

That's how you know it's a Seat. It's like VAG always tell them to make the dash as plasticky and nasty as possible to remind people they're in the cheap seats.

150 bhp will be fine - there are other similar cars (Mazda CX5, Ford Kuga, BMW X2, Audi Q3 ) with the same power.

Wasnt like that in the one I saw

Production of the Seat Ateca 2.0ltr 150ps 2WD has been be stopped due to a problem trying to included a NOx trap.

The only engine affected is the TDI150 fitted to the 2WD.

It appears that instead of an SCR catalytic converter a NOx storage catalytic converter was to be installed. For whatever reason this has not worked out and now a standard SCR is to be fitted. The delay in production has been suggested at 5-6 months so not until Spring 2017. Some rumours suggest maybe a longer delay.

This is an issue with the Volkswagen Group.

They have new models Type Approved and the engines EU tested and the results submitted to the authorities, then in 2015 there are revealed to be Co2 Irregularities

and vehicles get tested at Establishments that are maybe not as 'friendly' as those that tested a vehicle before.

If vehicles start getting tested properly under EU test conditions and come no place near the 'Original test results' and need given new Co2 g/km figures

you can see where the yet to be launched to the public but production ready vehicles might get EU Tested without irregularities.

All those Brochures printed, media packs, signs for the walls of Dealership walls and they are fiction.

Vorsprung durch technik.  But in Spanish with only a little hint of German.

Good point. I'm thinking of switching back to petrol now that the gulf in mpg and CO2 emissions has come down. Also by the time I buy my next car the tax rules will be different. I was a bit concerned that smaller petrol engines might struggle to pull a 7 seater but it seems there are plenty of examples out there. Most of the alternatives I'm considering to the Kodiaq have small engines as the petrol option. I also noticed the face-lift Grand C4 Picasso now has a 1.2 as the main petrol option.

disappointed the 4wd was only on diesel at release. car is actually really nice and seems to be getting very good reviews at present

They are all much smaller than the Kodiaq - it's meant to be a Touareg / X5 rival

Cheers, vtv, It shows someone reads my posts. I was suffering from brain fade when I wrote that, so let me apologise and make some corrections. First, I was conflating the Ateca with the Kodiaq, but they use different platforms, so the Kodiaq's longer to allow a 7 seat version (the 5 seater's the same length as the 7). Second, I was thinking BMW X3, not X2.

I've noted a load of figures that show in terms of length, height, weight, width and wheelbase (I'll post them up if anyone wants them!), the Kodiaq falls between the likes of the Mazda and the BMW X5/VW Touareg, slightly nearer the Mazda group than the BMW. But of all the cars I looked at, only the Skoda and X5 have a seven seat option. The BMW X5 weighs in at well over 2200 kg, while the Kodiaq tops out at 1798 kg (lightest is 1452).

I can't see any spec that includes an option of 7 seats for the Touareg. There might be something in this class - SUV - that has seven seats, a Volvo maybe.

So, what does this mean? The Skoda's only rival for body count is the X5, but everywhere else the BMW exceeds the Skoda. Physically the Kodiaq's rivals are much lower down the price range.

Three final comments - first, I think the X5 is truly ugly and if given one as a gift I'd sell it straight away, second, I still reckon the 150bhp engine will be enough in the lesser Kodiaqs, and third, I really do need to get out more.

The Kia Sorento might be a competitor to the Kodiaq being a 7 seat AWD SUV.

(Or the Hyundai Santa Fe 7 seater)

Cheers, Offski. I knew there would be some out there, but I needed to get away from the computer.

I see the new Peugeot 5008 will have a seven seat option.

Later -  also the Audi Q7.

(That's enough seven seaters.)
