First Service - Too Soon?

Featured Replies

Our L&K 1.8 TSi is coming up to its first birthday with less than 3K on the clock (it's been a quiet year). It is now showing a Maxidot display that we are counting down from 31 days to an oil service. Skoda Canterbury say they can't tell if it's on variable servicing until I take it in, but an oil change service would cost £170. I know all about about-town driving being a bad idea, but the car has been on several long journeys which should have blown off the cobwebs. Has anyone come across this problem and - if so - how was it resolved?

It sounds exactly as it was set at the PDI for Fixed Servicing in 9,400 miles or 372 days.

Doing such a low annual mileage Fixed Servicing sounds to be the correct regime for the car.

+1 for what Offski said

Go to the Skoda UK website and you'll see it is £149 for a Minor Service. Ask Skoda Canterbury what they do for that extra £21.

From new, I've never been charged more than the price quoted for Minor and Major Services on the Skoda website.

My first service was done at 10 months and 5,000 miles. Nothing wrong with an early change in my opinion, especially for its first oil change.

Gaz

I've had the same pop up on mine about 4days ago, apparently I've got 7200miles left or 26days.

Mines a TDI reckon I should ignore the message until it hits 18k; currently on 11.5k at a smudge under one year old.

Give it an annual service, but don't pay £170. I paid a smidge under £180 for my first service, but from comments made on here it looks like I could have had some left over to go down the pub! (but not with the car, obviously).

courty,

If you want to go 20 months or so without any checks done on your car before another winter passes then you can easily.

Best do your own checks though just to be sure to be sure.

Inspection underneath, steering and braking and suspension, visual checks basically & fluid checks, maybe lube some locks,

because basically other than Oil & Filter changes that is what you get a Skoda Servicing.

Checks and a report and a silly expensive bill.

Filters etc possibly at the technicians discretion.

Don't pay a penny more than £149 for a main dealer oil and oil filter service...

I said that to my dealer. And then was told that's only for vehicles over 3 years old.

For what that actually do (vs what they should do), it's a rip off half the time.

Why haven't you got the £479 3 year service plan?

Mines just been serviced at 1 year 5500 miles and they checked the tracking for free checked it over and oil and filter.

Its loosening up nicely.

I highly recommend clean oil after a year regardless of miles.

This gives them carte blanche to charge whatever they feel like whilst paying the same price for the parts/items that are used or replaced in the Skoda Fixed Price service. Nice little profit there.

I'd be pointing out that surely servicing an older car would cost more due to its age and mileage more components would require checking and replacing?

From owning the car brand new I've never had an issue getting any of my 9 services at the Fixed Price.

If you have another dealership close by, ask them what they charge(do it by email if possible so that you have proof), if it's the Fixed Price or cheaper, either use them or see if your local will match it.

Yep, poor dealers revert back to the small print and roll out the 3 year caveat.

Good dealers honour the fixed price plan and are grateful for your business.

If the dealer won't change the oil and filter for £149 vote with your feet.

Both my local dealers happily honoured the pricing for me, which is why they continue to get repeat business from me.

My December 2014 L&K had an oil change at the end of August undertaken by SKODA Europe based in Worthing. The company has taken over this franchise in the past couple of years and go by the name of JCB with their head office in Kent. I believe they also have franchises with Volvo and VW.

I joined their loyalty club which gives discounts and special offers. The oil change was undertaken for £109 and in achieving this I was given big discounts on oil, filter and labour. I chose not to have the pollen filter changed at this time as I will be due for my first service around December time. The mileage on my car for the oil change was around 12,000.

It so happens that JCB offer a holiday check which covers about 30 checks for the Loyalty Club members for £10 so an absolute bargain. It is the second time this year that I had this check as I drive down to Spain twice a year with a return journey mileage of up to 3,000 miles. Only one day after my last holiday check at the end of August a message came up on my Maxidot that I should have an oil change within 28 days. As I was starting out for Spain on the 1st September the dealership were able to fit me in so a good job done before going away.

As a matter of interest I have now just reached 14,000 miles after our journey down to Spain so I expect to have the first service around 17,000 miles.

Yeah it will have cleared out all the moisture in the exhaust etc but the oil itself degrades with the short journeys and long runs won't restore it. I'd have it changed
