Hi all,

I've just acquired a used estate which I knew had a few cosmetic issues I'd like to get sorted out.

One of these is that the boot seal has been damaged somehow. I'd really like to replace it before the wet weather really sets in. It looks a simple job but thought I may as well ask before I pull it off and find it's not so simple.

Does anyone know how it's attached? I thought held by the trim but it can't be all around so glued in place I guess? Also, any recommended source of parts other than main dealer?

I believe its a 'mechanical' fit i.e. the rubber has a moulded section that 'snaps on' to a metal extrusion (like the door seals).

 

But don't quote me....hopefully someone with better knowledge will be along soon to explain....

That's what I also thought - can't see why it would be different to the door seals. I'm tempted to just give it a go...

So I finally got this job done today, after having bought the new seal from the main dealer a couple of months ago. Main reason was that the old seal was looking like this:

 

As we thought, it's just a mechanical fit. I was able to pull it off around the rim of the boot quite easily.

 

The seal just pushes over this lip all the way round (note strange screw modification - looks like this trim piece and possibly driver's side rear light cluster have been removed at some point).

 

Pretty straight forward but I found it was quite easy to end up with a bulge at the bottom which prevents it going on properly. Had to loosen it off and work the seal into the corners a little more.

So further to this, I have the 'automatic' boot closure feature. After the swap, it seems that the boot doesn't completely close, I have to give it a small push to make it actually seal and lock. I'm assuming this is simply due to the new part being much less squashed down having not had the boot lid shut on it for 6-7 years. There's no way I can push it onto the lip any more.

 

One more question - anyone know exactly what these do or how they should work? I assume that they have some part in either popping the boot open for automatic opening or detecting that it's closed:

They're just bump stops to keep the boot closing mechanism snug and stop the door ratlling. They're height adjustable to get the best fit.

Ta - Looks like at least one side needs adjusting then! I'll have to see if I can work out how that's done.
