VCDS - worth buying, worth buying PRO kit ?

Featured Replies

There is a site where you can get the full PRO kit for £300 ish

I'd use it but only for some occasional coding, thinking rear camera, maybe a few feature here/there, who knows. (traffic sign recognition?)

Also was thinking of the update for MIB which I already downloaded 5Gb

But even if only doing limited coding - at that price thinking I could keep and selling as its pro still worth a majority of what it cost - agree or disagree ? Seems only slightly more expensive than the cable only, seems worth it ?

What can I do once I get it beside those obvious things on the mk3 ? Not really sure what it would open up but the few things I already thought of above ( and error scanning) seem worthwhile. Pricey though gotta convince myself !

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I thought that all the Pro kit was, was the HEX-USB + the older diagnostic to OBD2 adaptor + a plastic case?

Edit:- remember that there will always people a bit like me around who, given the choice of buying new from a VCDS genuine retailer with lots of come back if the cable has issues, or buying for maybe £50 less from an unknown source and maybe ending up with an abused/damaged cable  - I'd be paying more and buying new. Though please note, for me, this way of thinking does not include all items, some rougher tougher things, like tools can safely be bought secondhand if they look okay.

All you need is the hex can USB lead that can be had from gendan, marshalls industrial or ilexa for around £275.

You won't need any other leads or add ons.

Just to mention that I bought a genuine VCDS at least 10 years ago. Cars in those days weren't that clever, and there wasn't much scope for adaptations/recoding, so it was used mostly used for diagnostics. But here we are 10 years and a whole load of free upgrades later, and I can plug and play it with my 2016 Superb, with all the decodes for the coding. Bargain!

HBA is a £310 option, reverse camera is £300, both can be enabled/activated without needing the pro version of VCDS (although obviously you will need additional items for the camera). Throw in the possible cost of getting a garage to read any fault codes if needed in the future (when out of warranty) and the inconvenience of going there, and suddenly it's easy to justify ;) Never mind the myriad other adaptations possible...

Fair enough I just thought the casing for £40 with the extra bits etc looks more "genuine" and is a lot lot cheaper than they offer in the US.

But probably don't need the extra cables true, thanks. Just thought it might retain its value better and easier to punt on later as genuine with it, but your all probably right

I've seen people pay more for a used genuine cable on eBay than you can buy it for brand new.

Just a cable, on its own.

I've had the pro kit and the only item used was the main lead.

look around the internet , or even better search the forum for a chap in your area ..................and give him a fiver for the mods you want.

i am already on my second  cable so be careful the quality can be worse on cheap cables .................
