I have had my 2.0 TDI Octavia Sport for getting on a month now and so far have been very happy.

Can I ask fellow 2.0 TDI owners if they noticed the noise levels dropping from the engine after a period of time/miles. Although it's not bad I had a lift in a 1.9TDI Audi A4 and it was so much quieter - outside the car also. I thought the 2.0 TDI was supposed to be more refined than the 1.9 TDI variants?

I am mainly talking about tick over and 1st and 2nd gears. When fully on the move the engine does settle down ok.

Still very happy with the car - but thought I would ask the question.

My car still sounds like a bag of spanners on startup but it's definately quieter once warm than it used to be. Of course there's plenty of noise if you floor it at the lights but it's more like a manacing roar than a rattle now. Like it a lot.

I certainly get some nosie from mine but nothing overbearing. I woundnt expect petrol refinement from a diesel engine.

Im sure Audi's would have more/better sound proofing than Skoda and that may be why the one you travelled in sounded quieter, i used to have a 1.9D and cant say it was any quieter than the 2.0.

Mate in work has a 1.9Tdi Golf V. Definately more vocal than my motor especially when pushed and he's got 6000 more miles on his now. 1.9TDi is more rattly than the 2.0TDi.

Only got 2,500 miles on it now in 3 1/2 months. It's really quietened down over the last 500 miles or so. Using BP Ultimate seems to be a factor but that mainly just quietens down cold startups. Went dead easy for about 500 miles or so and then progressively pushed the car harder. I'm pretty hard on it now and that seems to help with the running in. The harder you push it the better it seems to go (within reason of course).

My PD130 engine is noisier than Dad's 2.0 TDI Golf. May be better built only?

Guess the only true test is to have them next door to one another, bonnet up?

I read an article a while back in diesel car magazine. The makers of long life oil recommend that you rev no higher than 1/2 throttle for 100 miles and then progressively treat the engine harsher. Apparently if you go too easy then the oil glazes the cylinder walls and you end up losing power and burning some precious LL oil. You have to hammer these engines a bit to get them to bed in properly. I haven't used any oil yet whereas by this stage my mate mate had put 1/2 litre into his golf. I reckon it's because he drove really gently for the 1st 1000 miles.

We are talking diesels here and there will always be a degree of diesel rattle so you will never get confused with it being a petrol engine. That said we are talking now of modern diesel technology so noise levels are very low when compared of old.

I have had a great number of new cars over the years and never so called "ran the car in" it was just driven in order for me to do my job and not one of those vehicles suffered as a result.

What I am saying is just drive the vehicle in the way you would if was one year old or 6 years old, just drive.

It usually took around 9000-10000 miles before my previous diesel engines got fully bedded in and you can usually hear and feel it take place if you are on a motorway. Petrol used to be around 3000-6000 miles for the same experience.

So it looks as if our new Octy (when we get it) will be getting the works from Noisekiller Acoustics, who have just sent me a set of samples - high-tech stuff and a great improvement on the heavy felt I fitted three decades ago...

I have 30K on mine, and is it quieter...... well it is certainly quieter than other diesels near me. But has it got quieter or have I just got used to the noise?

That's because they have changed to a piezo-electric injector system for the 170. Much quieter in operation than the standard system apparently.

The one thing that made me hesitate for a while before going for my 2.0TDi was the noise level. After a petrol Honda CRV it was noticeably higher. Having said that a bit of diesel rumble is no problem as far as I am concerned at tickover and low road speed. At motorway cruising speed it is not that much louder than the Honda - seems to hit a sweet spot around 2500 rpm. Naturally the Honda would have ben revving way, way higher for the same cruising speed being a rev box with only 5 gears.

Yup; give the occasional heavy right foot to help bed it it BUT check your oil level as I've noticed that if the oil level drops(even by half a litre) the engine is rougher and louder. And mines still a heavy drinker after 37k miles

Make sure to put the full top up container in. That's how much it needs to bring it back up to normal. If you put less than that in it won't be enough and you may be faced with the oil light again 100 miles later. Just lifting and closing the bonnet will reset the oil level light for 100 miles.

Obviously you should check the oil level with the dipstick as you proceed to add oil.

Now fully topped up to just under the Max level, yet to give it a run though.

Mid-way through a 24-hour test drive in a diesel DSG. Now, the dealer didn't have a 2.0 estate, so it was a 1.9 hatchback. Having read the reviews and comments here, I was expecting it to be a bit "gruff" and old-fashioned.

To my surprise, it was noticeably quieter than our Mk1 Octy (110bhp Elegance Esstate) both at idle and and at speed - possibly some fine-tuning since the initial launch? Or is the Mk2 inherently quieter because of better design?

It also seemed to have plenty of grunt, despite having been down-tuned from 110 to 105bhp - sailed up the hills with no effort. I'd more or less decided on the 2.0, but given the price differential between that and the 1.9 I'm having second thoughts.

Anyone out there who has driven both the 1.9 and 2.0 for extended periods and can say whether the latter is significantly quiter/smoother? As I'm buying for 10 years I'd be prepared to pay a premium for extra hush (and oomph), but without direct experience of the 2.0 it's a tricky call.

I own a octavia 110 TDI, and i found that much quieter than a 130PD I had as a loan car.

I also too the 2.0 sport DSG TDI out for a test drive (Including a motorway run on a cold day) and it's much quieter than either of the 1.9's to me.

I was looking at a new octavia, but not going to unless they get the 170 as the Seat Leon looks like it's almost as well buit and I appreciate a quite motorway drive :P. I'll probably stay with my current car for a while now.
