2.0TDI Engine Noise

Featured Replies

I own a octavia 110 TDI' date=' and i found that much quieter than a 130PD I had as a loan car.

I also too the 2.0 sport DSG TDI out for a test drive (Including a motorway run on a cold day) and it's much quieter than either of the 1.9's to me.

I was looking at a new octavia, but not going to unless they get the 170 as the Seat Leon looks like it's almost as well buit and I appreciate a quite motorway drive :P. I'll probably stay with my current car for a while now.[/quote']

The Leon build quality isn't up to Skoda standards in fact none of the Seat range are up to Skoda standards in my opinion. The 170 should be quieter than any of the PD's as not only is it 16v, it also has piezo electric injectors.

I tried both 1.9 and 2.0 TDi. 2.0 was definitely quieter and seemed to 'settle down' to a quiet (yet still diesel rattly) tickover much quicker than the 1.9. On the road the 2.0 is definitely more powerful so you don't use as much pedal to maintain same speeds, so I think, the 2.0 is just less stressed and thus quieter.

To be honest now I have had the 2.0 DSG estate for 2 months I don't really notice the engine noise apart from initial morning start up, and that is because I have to get out of the car to close the garage doors!! Auto close garage doors on order to solve that one.

In ordinary driving you just don't notice the engine at all, it is just powerful and the DSG gearbox is brilliant, changes are so smooth that you really don't know the car has changed gear. I drove automatics for ten years in the USA and this is the best and smoothest auto I have driven - and that is major praise.

VAG diesel engines sound like 'a bag of spanners' from a cold start. That's just the way it is and there's no getting away from it short of turning up the radio. Nothing to worry about though and once driving for 15 minutes the engine warms up and everything quietens down. When I use BP ultimate it takes the edge off the cold start racket but it's still noisy.

You are right VW group diesels do rattle like a bag of nails on start-up, particularly compared with Honda or BMW's - something to do with "duise-pumpe" technology I believe. The only thing differing one brand (VW, Audi or Skoda) from one another is soundproofing. I think the new Passat has better interior sound suppression than the Octy but from the outside it still sounds much the same as the Golf, Audi's or Skoda's. As you say it really is no big deal because it soon quietens down and in normal use is no different to sound levels than any other quality diesel.

If you can afford it go for the 2.0TDi. Normal driving there probably is not a lot to tell between the 1.9 and the 2.0 until you need that bit of extra poke to get around something or get clear of the milling herd and you are up into the 80s before you can say knife. True 170 would, in theory go even quicker, but do you really need it when the 140 will push you back into your seat.

The build quality of the SEAT is not up to the Skoda or VW standard, which is one of the reasons they are not selling very well especially in Spain. It is the attention to detail during design and build that produces a very good car as opposed to just a car, something it took the Americans a very long time to understand and even now have not achieved.

BTW Castrol assure me that their latest 'Edge' 5W-30 fully synthetic long-life oil is approved for the latest VAG diesels. Replaces 0W-30 SLX LongLife II and is to a new WV spec. which supercedes 506.01.

I sadly still own a Seat Toledo 130TDi, old shape, and can confirm that it

Blue dials screw up your eyes too after a while. That's why most manufacturers still use green. Looks good but you try a 2 hour night time drive home in front of them when you are knackered.

Yeh but no but yeh but no but, I just love the blue dials. I had them in my Golf and although you are right in that they are not the last word in visibility, I still loved them. It

I know what you mean about the high heels. SWMBO has caught me twice now though so 3rd strike and i'm out.

I sold a Mazda 626 Coupe once to a chap purely because he liked the sound of the horn, so someone buying a car purely because it has blue dash lights does not surprise me one bit.

Another sale was down to electric remote exterior mirrors.

A great many dealership sales staff do not understand what motivates their customers to buy and many a sale has been lost because they see the potential punter as a time waster, especially if they are scruffily dressed.

I have an A3 2.0TDI and the wife has a Fabia vRS. I'd say that the 2.0TDI engine is noisier on initial start up than the PD130. It also has a "throatier" sound on first application of any torque after initial startup..

I haven't noticed much change in noise as the miles mount up.

HI,

I hate the engine noise of my new octavia (10000 kms).

PLS let me know how your "noiskiller acoustics" worked!
