Another VRS Oil topic, with a twist!

Featured Replies

So i know we've all seen the VRS oil topics on which oil is best for the engine, I know i think I had this topic last year myself....

Last year I asked if it was OK to use Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W 30 as it met VW 507 which was the update to 505 if i remember rightly.

I attempted to buy the same oil from Euro Car Parts recently but they have sent me ECT 5W 30 C3 which has different standards listed.

Now it doesnt reference the VW standards anymore which is worrying, however still meets the BMW LL-04 and MB 229.51 standards which has thrown me on whether this is supposed to be an update to the original ECT oil or not, it now has extra standards such as DEXOS approval.

Could do with a bit of a clarification on where I stand with this, I'm leaning on thinking its not suitable as its not got the VW standard listed, but with it still having some of the old ones - I dont know..

has anyone else any experience in this :) !

Yes, oils suitable for CR diesel engines are NOT necessarily suitable for a PD diesel engine, take it back and get one which meets the appropriate VW specs.

Thanks for the clarification :) I'll look to swap it for the original ect.

How do you know it's for a cr?

It's an educated guess since PD engines are unique to VAG and that MB spec is suitable for the OM648 series engine which is a CR engine.

with the Ford Galaxy being one exception I can think of ;)

It's a SEAT Alhambra with Ford badges on it, so VAG as well then, although I believe Ford did fit their ghastly I4 petrol engine in some models.

Not really an answer to your question but the link to the thread below might interest you. I have a Shell fuel card through work so was thinking of switching to one of their oils but they don't seem to do a 5w-40 grade oil that meets the VAG spec.

Ps. alloys are still going strong :)

I used the original ect before its a 5w 30, it's now getting swapped (the c3) at euro for the original so that's good. He did try and flog me the quantum oil but there was about 3 quid price difference, didnt see the point :).

Good to see the alloys are holding up! Car got taken away last month to be turned into a cube...kinda miss it tbh, I'd love for the vrs to be in that colour :/

Costs pretty much the same as the shell with postage. I wanted something 507 spec, plus I'm happily riding the placebo effect of shell fuel and oil working in unison to make my car cleaner..it probably doesn't but hey I feel better thinking it :)

So little update.

Rang ECP to get the oil swapped for the standard ECT from the C3 and they said yep fine but theres only like 6 tubs left in the UK (Odd)...so went with that and went in today to pick it up...

only they gave me another C3 bottle... :dull:

After querying the problem with one of their technical guys he insisted that the spec sheet for both oils was identical, the only difference being the C3 is low ash for the shoddy, emissions failing bluemotion engines (I said bluemotion not greenline before anyone goes there :notme:)

I rang shell and queried if this was indeed the case, they advised to NOT use the oil in a PD engine and recommended something else.

They noted that the original ECT is now in its withdrawal phase so she wasn't surprised I couldn't find any anywhere...

If I wanted a 507 spec oil (which I do) she said to use one of the following:

1. Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W 30 (Opted for this and going to do another exchange with ECP tomorrow... :| )

http://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubricants/helix-for-cars/helix-fully-synthetic/shell-helix-ultra-ect-c2-c3-0w-30.html

2. Shell Helix Professional AV-L 5W 30

http://web-dev2.shell.co.uk/gbr/motorist/oils-lubricants/helix-for-cars/helix-fully-synthetic/shell-helix-ultra-professional-av-l-5w-30.html

For reference the oil that meets the 505.01 spec was the Shell helix professional AV (NOT AV-L) 5w 30

http://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubricants/helix-for-cars/helix-semi-synthetic/shell-helix-hx7-professional-av-5w-30.html

Hopefully this is the last change ill need to do and this will be OK, I was wondering what the difference will be in going from a 5W 30 to a 0W 30? :sun:

Moral of the story; don't trust ECP to give you the right answer, they don't understand the question!

The box-shifting morons could've wrecked your top end with that bad advice.

With respect to you i dont understand why you cant just stick quantum platinum 5w 40 in.

I looked into this a few years ago and came to the conclusion that 5w 40 is the correct oil for the pd and that 5w 30 is too thin.

Viscosity is a red herring, the critical factor in PD oil is the additive pack, CR oil doesn't need this additive pack because it doesn't have unit injectors and the cam lobes are wider reducing the need for anti-spalling additives such as Zinc.

I cant disagree with what you have said sepulchrave but quantum is MORE than adequate (and have the correct additive pack) to use in a now old pd engine.

I dont see how a 507 spec oil is better than a 505.01 spec oil.unless you have a dpf or do stupid(imo) longlife sevice intervals.

You're right about specs. engine oil is either good enough or it isn't, the rest is clever advertising and gullible customers, 507 is just an updated spec. suitable for high mileage users who want to avoid the inconvenience and expense of changing the oil so often, high mileage vehicles tend to do the majority of their mileage in top gear at motorway speeds, this usage pattern is particularly kind to the engine anyway since it's running at optimum temperature, oil pressure and constant speed.

Its probably nothing special I admit that, It's more than likely only due to me seeing a use Shell sticker under the bonnet and then...Using Shell :D

Quantum would probably do just fine too, but i'd got 2L of the shell ECT left from when I changed the oil last time so wanted something that would allow me to use the last 2L of that and hopefully get another ECT load for the rest - I've just got to reconfirm today with shell that I can/cant mix the original ECT with ECT C2/C3 as I don't want a random 2L left that I cant do anything with :dull:

Hi, I bought a fabia vrs mk1 last week and am wondering what engine oil to use? Always used Castrol GTX on other diesels I've owned and hadn't heard of PD oil before I bought the car.

Thanks mate appreciate that
