Question about corelation driving -> consumption

Featured Replies

Hy,

I just bought a brand new Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG last month and it's been great so far. I did like 3000 km in this time and everything was fine.

Now i observed something about how to drive to obtain better consumption and i wanted to ask for second opinion.

This is mainly for town driving with lots of traffic lights with a lot of stop go driving.

I always leave it D with Normal everywhere and i tried to pull away from stop gently until i reach cruising speed and then maintaining the speed. With this technique i observed the consumption was a little bit high.

Some day i wanted to play a bit with the car and accelerated more violently when leaving from stop lights and then cruising at the same speed as before.

Now i observed that the later technique was giving me better consumption.

Is this possible ?

I thought that driving off boost is more economically. Is this the advantage of the turbo compressor or just some weird coincidence ?

Thank you.

I presume more fuel is consumed if you slowly accelerate to desired speed then cruise, as apposed to quickly getting to desired speed then cruising ?

The longer you cruise, the lower your consumption is. Accelerating burns more fuel anyway, so if you do it a bit faster (without burning rubber), you'll spend more time cruising.

Yup, there's a balance.  If you floor it completely, you'll also use more fuel. There's an optimum rate of acceleration that you need to find by practice. Such is a the fun of hypermiling. ;)

I was not flooring it. I just pressed more the accelerator and it was changing gears at around 3300-3700 and getting to cruising speeds quickly.

So i think it's not the best way just to barely press the accelerator because it will take time to reach the cruising speed with more fuel burned for the same thing.

As GainfulShrimp said .. it is a balance that need to be found by practice :)

Turbos enhance efficiency as well as power, by harnessing energy of the exhaust gases that would otherwise be wasted. So if your engine has one, you certainly should use it.

That's what I say to my wife but she thinks it is an excuse for me to enjoy myself! :D

Yes, accelerating moderately (accelerator pedal approx half down) is better than accelerating sloooowly. I was taught this on a "green fleet" course by FDM (the Danish equivalent of AA) last year.

Unfortunately a lot of people have misunderstood this and takes forever to reach the speed limit

Nice to know about this half down pedal. I found about this by mistake. Thanks. :)

what kind of numbers are you getting for your 1.8 tsi if i may ask ? mpg or km/l

Im curious as well.

And is it a Fwd or 4x4?

Hi,

I live in Bucharest (Romania) which is a very busy city with lots of traffic (i do 10 kms in about 40 minutes to work) and the consumption for this stop/go traffic is not really very representative but i will give you some figure. My car is normal FWD 1.8 TSI and it has only 3000 km on board so this may improve.

In the conditions above i have like 11-12 l/100km (between 23.5 and 25.6 UK mpg)

In the summer when the traffic was "normal" i was between 9 and 10 l/100km (between 31.3 and 28.2 UK mpg)

My last trip outside the town was a 900km trip in the country on national roads (not highway) and i drove pretty fast for those roads and i got an average of 6.3 l/100 km (44.8 UK mpg).

The only time i drove only on highway with constant speed of 140 km/h i got like 8 l/100km (35.3 UK mpg) with 4 people on board.

I like to mention that it is a DSG and have 17 inch wheels and i put 95 RON petrol in it.

I hope these figures will improve slightly when the car will have more miles on it :)
