Had an encounter with a Mk3 Golf VR6 last night.

I was on my way home from work last night and I was queuing to enter a roundabout. I spotted the VR6 to my right with tints and very low. He set off like a scolded cat across this roundabout

Think He would have got you top end wise! 174BHP from the 2.8VR and 190Bhp from the 2.9 fitted to the Corrado! Quite conservative considering today's power out puts!!!!

Beyond 110 mph the Fabia doesn't pull like it does up to that point, so i have no doubt that the bigger lungs would start to do it's thing all the way to 150 or something !

Had a similar experience lately, was on a dual carriageway when two MkIII GTIs (one 8v, the other 16v) joined from a slip-lane just ahead of me, still in a 50 zone, doing a whole load more. I was pootling at 55ish in 6th, dropped a gear (in hindsight two might have been better). Wasn't long before I'd dispatched the 8v but the 16v was a different matter altogether. It was uphill and I think I was beginning to gain on the 16v but then we hit the next 50 zone and my turn-off. Interesting though.

2.8 VR6 doesn't pull that well low down...but nothing the VSR manifold couldn't fix.

2.9 VR6 much better apparently.

Unless the suspension was fettled VR6 was a bit on the soggy/wallowy side....I had Eibach springs and Koni adjustable which made it a lot better.

I've had two VR6s, both Golf 2.8s and can honestly say the suspension on the earlier ones was not good at all. The later one I had actually handled quite well so obviously VW developed the car quite a bit over the years as the later engine seemed to pull better too.

You have to drive the car quite hard to get the best from it, where as the TDI can strut it's stuff anytime any place.

The VR6 does have the edge in the sound department though.

The good old Golf VR6 always had a reputation as a lard a55, but it's a good bit lighter than a Furby vRS....and probably an Octy vRS too. It's just that it had a bit of a soft chassis with a heavy engine up front - sound familiar Furby vRS owners?!!

Funny you say that, I was a joint owner of an Abarth (before fiat took the name) little 2 seater coupe racing car, 900cc engine - 10,000rpm 190bhp. the car was very old too!!

Those crazy italians. Like me, i can imagine you look at the current Abarth badged Fiats with utter contempt.

I think the last proper Fiat Abarth was the Strada 130. Bit of a tool in its day.

Maybe.VW are strapping turbochargers and superchargers on to little engines.

Look at formula 1 - they're only 1500CC these days and naturally aspirated - 400+bhp. The problem is that the power gets moved further and further up the rev range and the useable power band gets narrower and narrower - so you need more gears. Also, the engine lifespan is reduced.

There is no substitute for cubic capacity as far as engines are concerned.

Really??? i thought F1 engines were 3000cc-4000cc ish, i may be wrong though :o

Had a wee look up, 2.4L is the max, with exeptions.

Formula One engines may be no more than 2.4 litres in capacity. They must have 8 cylinders in a 90-degree formation' date=' with two inlet and two exhaust valves per cylinder. Yeah used to have quite a bit of sideways fun in my mates 130 till it rusted into nothing :rolleyes:

I'll have a look over the weekend and see if I can any pictures of the Abarth, I can almost gaurantee you wont have seen one of them (certainly not on the road).

My mate Rob has a Corrado VR6 (2.9 V6) and we're almost exactly matched from a standing start up to silly speeds, where his has the edge (no replacement for displacement!).

Mid range I was all over him.

50 on the dual carriageway, neck and neck... He was in 3rd, I was in 5th. Both floored it at the same time and it was bye bye Corrado! I pulled loads and loads on him.

Anyway, I love the Corrado VR6, the way it looks, the way it handles and the way it sounds... All better than the Fabia imho.

Quite agree, Josh! The Corrado in any guise is an awesome car, but esecially the G60 and the VR6.
